Salary: Appointment will be made on CNM 2 Pay scale (€62,699 - €79,227 LSI) at a point in line with Government pay policy.
Hours of work: 37.5 Hours Per Week

Position Summary:
The Clinical Practice Support Nurse (CPSN) is a key member of the Nursing Management Team within the Emergency Directorate. The role centres on the identification, support and provision of learning opportunities in clinical nursing practice.
The CPSN is responsible for promoting best practice through staff development and education. The Clinical Support Nurse for the Emergency Directorate acts as a resource facilitator to assist individual staff nurses to reach their full potential at each stage of development. The successful candidate must have appropriate interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills to perform the role effectively.

Clinical Practice
- Ensure all staff practice nursing within the code of practice set by NMBI Specific responsibilities of the Clinical Practise Support Nurse include but are not limited to:
- Orientation of new nurses
- Assist in the facilitation of Mandatory education
- Provide clinical support and ongoing education of nurses, and other members of the Multidisciplinary team
- Assessment of nurses using clinical competencies
- Identify and respond to the learning needs of individuals and the service
- Evaluation of the effectiveness of education within the Emergency Department directorate
- Collaborate with Clinical Nurse Managers to ensure Staff Nurses are allocated to facilitate a broad range of experiences, and thus develop their skills.
- Develops evidence-based educational materials and evaluate their effectiveness, and regularly
update same to reflect best practice.
- Take charge of shift with a learner to promote their development, and to facilitate other Clinical Nurse Managers to maintain their clinical skills or to relieve them to perform their allocated. management duties.
- Adopt a flexible approach to personal duty roster.
- Assist in updating Policies, Procedures, Protocols and Standards in the Emergency Department Directorate liaising with all staff.
- Act as a positive role model by adhering to directorate and hospital Policies procedure and guidelines
- Work alongside new and developing nurses demonstrating best practice guidelines and mentorship.
Education and Development
- Assess and identify individual staff nurses learning and development needs and develop and implement training programmes to meet these needs in liaison with the Clinical Nurse Managers.
- To actively participate in the development and implementation of post graduate and specialist practice modules in Emergency Nursing Programmes.
- Provide leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of post graduate Emergency Nursing Programmes to include the development and delivery of lectures/tutorial presentations, providing advice to students regarding course work and serving as an examiner of course work as appropriate. (This work will be undertaken in collaboration with senior clinical staff and designated course coordinator).
- Introduce ongoing learning strategies appropriate to the area. Such strategies to include clinical case presentations, tutorials, journal club and instructional sessions regarding the use of medical technology.
- Carry out and document progress of staff giving feedback regarding strengths and weaknesses
in collaboration with Clinical Nurse Managers.
- Identifies the individual and collective learning needs of the delivery of formal and informal education. Acts as a role model by demonstrating skilled nursing care in the clinical situation, and work with staff in the clinical environment.
- Encourage staff to participate in development programmes where staff have the opportunity for their personnel development.
- Develops methods of assessing the quality and effectiveness of the training / education programmes.
- Liaise with clinical nurse managers in relation to poor performance issues of individual staff members as required.
- Coordinate the orientation / induction programme for new staff in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Manager, Course Coordinator and the Centre of Education and work with these nurses clinically ensuring they receive theoretical and practical training to make them safe practitioners.
- Contribute to the nursing education component of the strategic plan of the organisation.
- Keep individual staff nurses informed of their progress and encourage feedback regarding strengths, weaknesses, potential and need for further clinical training and experience. Deal effectively with non performance.
- Participate in the organisation of an end of year Hospital Clinical Nursing Scientific Symposium and Emergency Nursing Annual Conference.
- Liase with units/specialities nationally and internationally and any other group that will enhance clinical development.
- Co-ordinate and facilitate the review of nursing practice and guidelines for practice by: Examining existing nursing practices and guidelines for practice in consultation with clinical nurse managers, staff nurses and the multidisciplinary team. This will involve coordination of the Policy Review Group and may involve setting up project workshops relating to the review of complex issues of nursing practice such as care planning or patient assessment technique.
- Reviewing new literature relating to the specific area under review and formulating draft guidelines for further consideration.

- Maintain and update knowledge and keep abreast of relevant professional development and all current trends within the speciality of Emergency nursing.
- Maintaining and updating personal skills in clinical nursing by “hands on” nursing commitment.
- Discuss present performance and future needs with the CNM 3 and Directorate Nurse Manager on a regular basis.
- Drive new changes that will enhance patient care.

Mandatory Requirements:
1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc:
(a) Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition
- Are registered in the relevant division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann) or entitled to be so registered.
- Have at least 5 years post registration experience (or an aggregrate of 5 years fulltime post registration experience) of which 2 years must be in the speciality or related area.
- Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.
- Candidates must demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development

2. Annual registration
- On appointment, practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the relevant division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann).
- Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).
