Position Description

The Human Factors Specialist will integrate human factors science and principles into safety management systems, operational procedures and organisational culture in ESBN, ensuring proactive safety and reducing the risk of human error. The role supports the business to strengthen systems to support safety performance, ensuring human strengths and limitations are integrated into planning, training, investigations and projects.

The role provides specialist input that improves usability, reduces error, and supports decision-making, and will support day-to-day operations through developing human factors knowledge and competence in key roles.

The safety culture team is responsible for driving the implementation of the Safety Culture Improvement plan, and the Human Factors specialist’s role in this is to identify and manage human factors requirements. This includes partnering with stakeholders to identify and address human factors barriers to safety, integrating human factors into all aspects of our systems and practices.

The role will also coordinate efforts to measure and report on safety culture progress, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s strategic objectives and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Integrate Human Factors science and methodologies into the business, including task analysis, human reliability analysis, human factors in risk assessment and incident investigation.
Liaise and coordinate with programme and project managers.
Identify and manage human factors requirements.
Provide specialist input into project design, ensuring human-system interactions are considered in risk management.
Undertake human factors analysis as required on any procedural or other internal changes, using appropriate Human Factors methods.
Develop and deliver training on Human Factors and non-technical skills.
Enable teams to embed Human Factors considerations into planning, operational decisions, and design reviews, building organisational capacity to manage performance risks.
Lead Human Factors input to investigations.

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (preferably human factors, psychology, or systems engineering).
A minimum of five years working in Human Factors in a Safety Critical industry.
A strong knowledge of Human Factors approaches and theories.
Excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams and functions.

Desirable

We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with a strong background in applying HF on projects and/or in developing and delivering HF training.
Registered member of the CIEHF, or equivalent professional qualification.
Experience of any of the following human factors methods: task analysis, workload assessment, human error analysis, environmental design.
Familiarity with Safety Management Systems and change management procedures.

Location

The role will be based in a Networks office, with the specific location to be agreed with the successful candidate. Travel will also form a regular component of the role.

Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.
