Senior Engineer - System Support & Anslysis
Job Purpose
The Operations Directorate within EirGrid comprises highly skilled professionals with backgrounds in engineering and business/commerce.
Ireland has a target to achieve 80% of our electricity to come from renewable resources by 2030 and to be net carbon neutral by 2050. The Operations Directorate is central to the delivery of our primary role – the operation, development and enhancement of the all-island power system and the wholesale electricity market. Creating a culture of continuous improvement whilst maintaining operational resilience, that drives technical and process innovation is central to delivering on this role.
System Support & Analysis is a team that manages a wide range of technical and commercial management functions. This includes the imperfections budget setting and reporting, annual tariff calculations, commissioning, testing and registration of market units, running DS3 system service auctions, technical performance management of service providers, meter/market data checking as per relevant codes and renewables reporting and analysis and settlement. The team also provides support to System Operations and Markets as required and are a source of expertise for future development work across the business, ranging from supporting new systems to major projects. The team deals with ad hoc queries that do not naturally sit in other functions but require technical/commercial analysis to effectively answer.

Key Responsibilities
The role of Senior Engineer will support the System Support & Analysis team in ensuring that it fulfils its objective to bridge the gap between development and enduring operations whilst considering commercial impacts. They will be able to deliver on a range of technical and commercial processes designed to achieve regulated targets, meet stakeholder needs in line with company requirements. The role holder will work with the team in areas including multi-disciplined analysis of technical and economic problems, propose solutions, processes and methodologies, as well as prepare presentations and reports for internal and external stakeholder engagement. The role holder will make contributions end-to-end across the power system and market, from supporting the registration, commissioning and testing of new participants to monitoring their ongoing performance, managing their technical data and market outcomes all the way through to decommissioning. The Senior Engineer will also ensure that critical system services, including blackstart and emergency restoration, are managed in accordance with secure but economic principles for the benefit of all electricity consumers.

- You will support complex projects, both technical and commercial, which are designed to achieve regulated targets and meet stakeholder needs in line with company requirements.
- You will develop policy, processes and procedures, for the registration, commissioning, testing and performance monitoring of system users including generators, interconnectors and demand customers.
- Execute technical and economic analysis associated with forecasting imperfections and tariffs and explain what costs are incurred in actual outcomes.
- You will carry out technology reviews, draft technical specifications and develop business requirements.
- Support ancillary service market participation in Ireland for generators and DS3 service providers including management of revenue streams and associated technical products.
- You will represent EirGrid on key pan-European TSO committees and working groups focussing on system services or emergency restoration, set up to realise the development of a well-functioning Europe-wide electricity power system and market.
- Mentor junior members of the team.
- You will apply your skills, knowledge and experience to effectively deliver on your team’s objectives, overcoming new challenges and technical issues as they arise.
- You will use your technical, report writing and verbal communications skills to continuously improve the way we work, making it more efficient and effective as well as transparent and easy to understand for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Essential
- Engineering degree or equivalent, with a minimum of 4 years post qualification experience in the electricity industry, especially system operations or markets.
- Strong knowledge of electrical power systems and awareness of energy targets and ambitions for decarbonisation of the energy sector.
- Knowledge of wholesale power markets and market arrangements in the SEM.
- Ability to deliver medium/large projects.
- Excellent organisational skills and strong track record of delivery
- Experience in a multidisciplinary team and excellent qualitative and quantitative analytical abilities, coupled with the ability to make reasoned judgements based on available information in a changing and dynamic environment.
- Ability to conceive and introduce innovative ideas.
- Ability to translate policy and concepts into rules, codes and standards and vice versa.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work effectively as part of a team, capable of delivering shared goals with internal and external stakeholders through open dialogue, while also being able to define and guide own work under minimal supervision.
- Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
- Passionate, engaging with a drive and enthusiasm to deliver on the company vision and strategy.
Desirable
- Project management experience of project delivery or Professional certification.
- Plant testing including OEM factory testing as well as supporting commissioning and energisation.
- Power system analysis tools such as Plexos and PSS/E.
