Salary: Appointment will be made on the senior respiratory physiologist salary scale (€55,114-€72,168) at a point in line with Government pay policy.
Hours of work: Full time - 35 hours per week

Position Summary:
The Respiratory Physiology/Pulmonary Function Department in Beaumont Hospital, Integrated Care service in Omni
Park Shopping Centre and the Sleep Diagnostic Department in St Joseph’s Hospital, Raheny carry out a range of non-
invasive lung function and sleep investigations for inpatients, out-patients, and ambulatory care patients under the
care of Beaumont Hospital.
These include:
- Spirometry (with reversibility testing)
- Lung volume measurement by gas dilution methods and body plethysmography
- Diffusion capacity measurement
- Tests of respiratory muscle function including MIP, MEP and SNIP
- Impulse Oscillometry
- FeNO measurement
- Bronchial Provocation tests
- Hypoxic challenge tests
- Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)
- Overnight Oximetry
- Polysomnography and limited sleep studies (including home studies) with analysis, scoring and reporting
- Non-invasive Ventilation (CPAP) set-up, monitoring and optimisation
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge and competence and be suitably qualified to perform/train in all of these areas. The Respiratory Physiology Department is a key service provider for a wide number of areas within the organisation, and is essential to the management of patients. Under the enhanced clinical care programme for chronic disease, Beaumont Hospital Respiratory Physiology Department will provide direct access to diagnostic spirometry studies for patients with suspected chronic airways disease (e.g. COPD and asthma) to GPs and to Respiratory Integrated Care team members working within the Beaumont Hospital catchment area of Dublin North Centre and County Community Healthcare Organisation 9 (DNCC CHO 9) and dedicated ambulatory care hub. The Senior Respiratory Physiologist will work as a key team member supporting and providing the above services across the Respiratory Physiology/Pulmonary Function Department in Beaumont Hospital, Integrated Care service in Omni Park Shopping Centre and the Sleep Diagnostic Department in St Joseph’s Hospital, Raheny.
Responsibilities:
The main Roles and Responsibilities of the Senior Respiratory Physiologist are as follows:
To carry out his/her duties under the supervision and control of the Chief II and Chief I Respiratory
Physiologist/Consultant in charge or other such person designated for that purpose by the Board.
- To carry out the duties of a Senior Respiratory Physiologist the Respiratory Physiology/Pulmonary Function
Department in Beaumont Hospital, Integrated Care service in Omni Park Shopping Centre and the Sleep
Diagnostic Department in St Joseph’s Hospital, Raheny in the hospital or at any other location as maybe
required by the Chief Executive or designated officer.
- To work flexible hours in order to deliver patient oriented service.
- To work off-site in dedicated ambulatory care hub, the Beaumont Hospital PFT lab and/or outpatient clinics
- To keep such records appropriate to his/her office as he/she may be required by the Chief Executive or
designated officer.
- To attend at such times and such places as may be designated by the Chief Executive or designated officer
and to remain in attendance there as long as his/her services are required.
Specific Technical requirements:
Competence in history taking and interpretation of request forms- Prioritisation of tests based on clinical need appropriately
- Performance of the procedures listed above to expected high standard
- Recognition of abnormal results
- Notification of the referring physician and Chief 11 physiologist when abnormal results are identified
- Provision of an efficient, effective and high quality pulmonary function test service in the community
- Technical interpretation of tests highlighting abnormal or inconsistent results
- Presentation of all performed test results appropriately
- Participation and reassurance of the patients.
- Proficiency in initiating, and assisting in, medical emergencies including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
- Maintenance of clear and accurate patient records according to hospital and professional
policies/guidelines.
Equipment management:
Completion of daily maintenance , calibration ,verification or biocontrols of equipment- Completion of daily cleaning and decontamination of equipment as per manufacturer recommendations
and in conjunction with hospital infection control policy
- Regular maintenance of equipment and completion of quality assurance checks.
- Correct handling of hazardous materials e.g. Special gas mixtures, chemicals
· Maintenance of adequate laboratory supplies. · Participate in continuing education, remaining up-to-date with national/departmental quality assurance protocols

Completion of all Hospital Mandatory training.
Ensure that any educational materials and information databases which are used are up to date and evidence based.
Contribute to the education of nursing, medical and other staff in the implementation of patient care related to respiratory physiological measurement.
Commitment to in-service training of students and other physiologists.
Supervision of junior staff members in agreement with and/or in the absence of the Chief 11 Respiratory physiologist. ·
Assume the role of the department manager and/or deputise for the Chief Physiologist as appropriate during absences as required.
Data Quality:
Maintenance of high quality data regarding all activity within the department.
Maintenance of accurate statistics.
Participation in any audits/evaluation of service as required.
Participation in research as required.
Communication:
Work closely with the wider respiratory MDT and participate in patient case reviews or multidisciplinary meetings as required.
Effective communication skills.
Presentation of information in a clear and concise manner, especially the communication of instructions in an understandable fashion to patients.
Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
General Duties.
To foster good working relationships within the multidisciplinary staff of the Directorate and with other Hospital Departments. Identification of opportunities for improvement and initiation of steps to accomplish same.
Assisting in the identification of cost improvements, service developments and income generation opportunities within the Directorate. Act with digression and integrity at all times in relation to sensitive data linked to the directorate or the hospital.
Maintenance of professional appearance, dress code and wearing of identification badge when working.
Compliance with guidelines for absence or tardiness.
Attendance at staff meetings · Be responsive to email and other postings.
Attendance at all required in-service meetings.
Be flexible to meet the needs of the department and hospital.

Selection Criteria:
Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:
(a)(i)Possess BSc in Clinical Measurement from the Dublin Institute of Technology.
OR
(ii)Possess BSc in Clinical Measurement from Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin)
OR
(iii) Possess an equivalent relevant scientific qualification (Level 8)as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Science(IIMCS)
OR
(iv)Possess the Certificate in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement (MPPM) form the Dublin Institute of Technology
OR
(iv)Hold an equivalent scientific qualification as confirmed by the Irish Institute of Clinical Measurement Science awarded in or before 2005.(See Note 1*)
AND
(b) Have a minimum of 4 years fulltime (or an aggregate of 3 years fulltime) relevant post qualification experience.
AND
(c) Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office as outlined above.
Note 1 * In exceptional cases, where the IICMS are not in position to validate pre 2005 qualifications, the Clinical Measurement Physiologists expert on the eligibility / selection board may, at their discretion, deem as eligible:
HSE applications who are currently employed as Clinical Measurement Physiologists, and who were employed in or before 2005, on the presentation of proof of their qualification/s that was acceptable on the commencement of their employment.
Desirable:
Previous Experience in a Senior Respiratory Physiologist role with knowledge of advanced testing.
