Job Title: Assistant Publishing Editor

Function: Editorial

Department: Production

Reporting to: Head of Newspaper Operations

Role Purpose

The Assistant Publishing Editor supports the title editor/night editor and Head of Editorial Newspaper Operations in the production of our print titles, as a by-product of our digital journalism, seeing the final print product through to completion within a template-driven workflow to final sign-off.

The role holder oversees and assists with curating, editing and enhancing content for digital publication before being exported to print. They work collaboratively with the production team and Publishing Desk, as well as with section, group and title editors and the Audience Team to ensure the timely delivery of quality finished content.

This function covers a seven-day operation in our integrated newsroom on a rostered basis.

Role Responsibilities (Overview)

Work closely and collaboratively with section, group and title editors on the selection and display of content, ensuring all content is publication-ready and meeting SEO, UX and print demands.
Deliver final print pages, edit content and write compelling headlines, while contributing to the highest possible editorial standards across all our digital and print content, and ensure deadlines are met.
Work collaboratively with the production team to ensure an efficient output of content, with accuracy and consistency in copy editing, and caption and headline writing.
Work closely with the Visuals and Design teams to ensure strong visual presentation.
Ensure all content is free of any potential legal issues/
Carry out your duties at all times in accordance with the Mediahuis Editorial Code of Practice and relevant professional and legal codes.

Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)

At least 5 years’ experience in a digitally focused editorial production role with some team lead exposure.
Experience of all relevant CMS platforms and software, including Atex, InDesign and Photoshop. Experience of a digital CMS is also required, and CUE experience would be an advantage.
Comprehensive knowledge of house style.
A good knowledge of media law, especially defamation, privacy, copyright and data protection.
