This internship provides an opportunity for biosciences (or similar discipline) graduates to gain valuable experience bridging the gap between study and work. They will be in a position to develop their skills and knowledge base in a workplace setting under the full support and guidance of a SETU mentor. In addition, the intern will be able to apply their knowledge in a real work environment, gain networking opportunities and build their confidence, thus enhancing their career prospects.
The range of duties assigned to an intern may vary greatly, but the following indicate some of the principal supervised duties and responsibilities:
Work in a research environment: the successful candidate will be involved with work on individual research projects as the need arises and as instructed by the Directors of enviroCORE.
Maturing in positions of responsibility: the intern will be involved in the monitoring of the laboratory equipment and liaise with the Chief Technical Officer of the Department for a prompt and timely response to any problems. They will also be involved in monitoring availability of general laboratory consumables and organise communal orders. In addition, the Intern will assist with the safe disposal of the communal laboratory waste.
Teamwork and Coordination: via the above-mentioned activities the Intern will be central to the operation of enviroCORE and will liaise with all members of the CORE at various degrees. This experience will be catalytic in developing the Intern’s teamwork skills.
Networking: via their research activities they will establish valuable contacts and networks thus enhancing their future career prospects. These can be established via contacts with national and international collaborators, involvement with Teagasc linked projects, liaising with industrial partners as necessary, and attending conferences (e.g., Environ). The Intern may also be involved in bioscience and environmental science outreach e.g., Science week in the promotion of Science to the wider community.
Undertake other duties as required by the Head of Department or other designated person
