Charter Medical Private Hospital is a 77 bedded surgical hospital located on the outskirts of Mullingar with 4 Operating theatres and endoscopy unit. We provide a wide range of surgical care across a broad spectrum of specialties to include:
General surgery, ENT, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Urology, Ophthalmology, Maxillofacial, Dental, Dermatology and GI Endoscopy. Other diagnostic services include X Ray, Ultrasound, MRI, Dexa, PFT laboratory and outpatient cardiology.
The Role
We are in the process of expanding and developing our services to include a full upgrade to our theatres and endoscopy unit.
The Theatre manager will have responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Theatre department with a particular emphasis on managing staff resources efficiently, scheduling theatre lists to maximise cost efficiencies whilst ensuring a patient centred approach is maintained in line with best practice.
The Theatre manager is responsible for the overall planning and management of both the Nursing and HCA team as well as acting as an expert resource in the field of operating rooms activity and requirements to further support and guide Hospital wide initiatives or development.

The Person
- Must be registered in the General Division of the register of Nurses maintained by Nursing and Midwifery Board Ireland or registered as ODP with HCPC.
- Degree holder to Master Level desirable
- Have at least five years recent relevant post-registration experience in an acute hospital setting
- Have a recognised post-registration course in Peri-Operative Theatre practice Skills/ Competencies
- Excellent Management and Leadership Skills
- Possess well-developed interpersonal and organisational skills, proven clinical ability, risk management, clinical audit and excellent communication skills.
Responsibilities
Operational
- The Theatre manager will manage the safe delivery and co-ordination of nursing/clinical practitioner services for patients.
- Provide operational support to areas of responsibility to include senior management walkabouts, safety and quality checks and user satisfaction.
- Evaluate the systems of nursing care delivery and recommend changes in nursing procedures, practices and policies in order to reflect an evidence-based practice approach to service delivery compliant with National clinical guidelines and accreditation standards
- Manage the Theatre taking responsibility for the safe delivery and co-ordination of nursing/clinical practitioner services for patients, ensuring effective, efficient and quality specialist nursing care service.
- Plan, develop and monitor human and budget resource plans to ensure an effective and efficient service
- Plan specialist perioperative care service, innovations and developments.
- Ensure that perioperative care is based on the latest research findings and constitute best practice.
- Develop close links with other healthcare facilities relevant to the delivery and enhancement of services.
- Monitor complaints and investigate any nursing and clinical complaints, taking corrective action as appropriate and review audit to ensure there are no re-occurrences.
- Ensure that all records are properly and accurately maintained.
- Facilitate effective communication with patients, relatives, visitors and multi-disciplinary team as necessary ensuring patient confidentiality is respected and always maintained.
- Communicate and develop effective relationships with Medical Consultants, Clinical Nurse Managers and other relevant hospital staff to ensure safe, efficient management of the Unit/Ward.
- Identify opportunities for the development of services that will improve the care of patients.
- Liaise with the Head of Clinical & Nursing Services on a regular basis, as appropriate, providing feedback on Unit/Ward activity and issues.
- Ensure that systems for the provision of clinical and non-clinical services are satisfactory and that they are timely and economically utilised.
- Undertake an annual review of nursing services including the preparation of an annual report.
- Ensure that all staff within the Unit are familiar with the plan for management of critical incidents and that the Unit is ready to meet such a demand.
- Work with the IT Department and clinicians in the development of computerised systems for patient management and ensure that these are maintained and upgraded.
- In consultation with staff continually monitor stock levels, suitability, usage and potential for savings. Advise the Director of Nursing on alternative supplies and changes in practice which impact on costs.
- Provide advice to the Director of Nursing on matters relating to the care of patients in Theatre
- Promote a patient centred culture of openness and responsiveness to positive and constructive patient feedback and ensuring patient dignity, respect and choice is maintained in their care.
- Drive efficiencies in relation to Theatre scheduling.
- Participating with the Director of Nursing, Clinical Nurse Managers and Clinical Nurse Specialist to ensure that the day-to-day activities and resources of the hospital are managed and co-ordinated in each area so that a patient focused service is delivered.
- Participate in the hospital committees as delegated.
- Determine how best to achieve the aims, directions and objectives set by the Director of Nursing to ensure they are delivered within the timeframe, policies, guidelines and limits set.
- Liaise and give reports to the Director of Nursing as required. The post holder will be requested to participate / lead projects on a hospital/organisational wide basis by the CEO and/or Director of Nursing.
- Lead in the areas of clinical governance e.g., risk management and quality.
Managerial
- Ensure that all nursing and support services are managed to optimise effectiveness, quality and efficiency.
- Facilitate Nurse Managers in deciding how the workload is to be measured, care delivered, and quality monitored.
- Participate in the overall financial planning of the service including the assessment of priorities in pay and non-pay expenditure.
- Participate in the workforce planning for Theatre staffing developments and the recruitment and retention of a highly skilled workforce
- Promote an environment that is conducive to the development of best practice, enhances staff retention and promotes good employee relations
- Deal with relevant employee relations issues relating to nursing and HCA staff in consultation with the HR Manager and the Director of Nursing where relevant.
Learning & Education
- Identify the clinical learning needs of staff relevant to service requirements and individual personal development, thereby ensuring in-service training programs meet service needs and fulfil the scope of practice for professional development.
- Promotes an environment which is conducive to the learning and education of staff, promoting evidence based practices and opportunities for staff to excel and develop in areas of specialism or expertise
- Provide professional and personal development opportunities for all nursing and support staff in line with annual appraisal and career development plans
- Oversee that the requirements of NMBI for the practice of professional nursing are met and upheld including the development of an expanded scope of nursing practice.
- Maintain accurate records of all study leave and education resources used.
Quality Improvement and Risk Management
- Ensure that there is compliance with all relevant Charter Medical Private Hospital guidelines, policies, procedures and relevant legislation and regulatory requirements. This includes responsibility for dealing with regulatory or professional bodies and inspections.
- Encourage continuous review and evaluation of policies, guidelines and existing practices through regular audit programmes and review engaging with the multi-disciplinary team where required.
- Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement across the department involving the team in continuous improvement initiatives and encouraging innovation.
- Set and monitor core objectives, standards and key performance indicators for the service and monitor performance against these standards through internal and (where applicable) external audit.
- Lead out on the requirements of the hospital’s accreditation process
- Participate fully in the requirement of the hospital’s risk management programme.
- Promote the delivery of a high standard of care to all patients. Encourage evidence-based practice and assist in the dissemination and implementation of research findings.
- Work with members of the Multidisciplinary team in devising Standard Operating Procedures.
- Develop a culture of safety, promoting positive reporting of incidents and near misses; investigate and take remedial action on incidents or near misses involving patients and staff according to hospital policies, protocols and guidelines.
- The identification and development of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which are congruent with the Hospital’s service plan targets.
- The development of Action Plans to address KPI targets egg: Integrated Discharge Planning
- Driving and promoting a Performance Management culture.
