Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the role of
HGV Fleet Mechanic/Fitter Monaghan Fire Service in Monaghan County Council. The post holder will, on appointment, be responsible for performing the duties and responsibilities described below appropriate to the post of HGV Fleet Mechanic/Fitter. The
HGV Fleet Mechanic/Fitter will report to the Chief Fire Officer or other duly authorised person within the Roads Department.
The HGV Fleet Mechanic/Fitter will be responsible for the proactive and reactive maintenance of all Fire Service and Civil Defence vehicles, including Class B appliances, specialist vehicles, personnel carriers and support units. The role will encompass scheduled preventive maintenance, defect diagnosis, and repairs, as well as oversight of compliance with CVRT standards. Additionally, the mechanic will gradually assume responsibility for auxiliary systems such as pumps, generators, and ladder gantries, which will initially be serviced by subcontractors until the mechanic is fully trained.
The initial employment shall be Monaghan Fire Station, but the Council may, at its absolute discretion, assign the employee to such work base as may be required from time to time.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The
HGV Fleet Mechanic/Fitter will be required to carry out all the duties allocated by the Council under the direction and supervision of the relevant supervisor. It is understood that there will be occasions outside of normal working hours when the person employed will be assigned to cover breakdowns. The Council requires that the carrying out of such duties be in a spirit of co-operation and good will.
The duties will include but are not limited to:
- Work under the direction and control of the Chief Fire Officer
- Undergo specialist training in the maintenance and repair of equipment. It may be necessary to travel outside the County for this training.
- Drive Fire Service vehicles.
- Carry out maintenance work and repairs on all Fire Service appliances and equipment.
- Travel to Fire Stations within the County to carry out duties.
- Carry out such other duties as may be assigned from time to time as directed by the Chief Fire Officer

The person employed will be required to perform assigned duties exercising a duty of care, in the interest of safety of oneself, fellow employees and the public, at all times in compliance with Monaghan County Council’s Health & Safety Management System. Working in a safe manner, in full compliance with the relevant safety legislation and construction regulations, will be the primary responsibility of the Machinery Yard Supervisor.

The post holder may therefore be required to perform duties appropriate to the post, other than those detailed above and to take instruction from and report to an appropriate officer or such designated officer as may be assigned from time to time by Monaghan County Council.
