Workshop Mechanic / Plant Fitter
GPX Rail Ltd are currently seeking a practical and motivated Workshop Mechanic / Plant Fitter to join our team at our workshop facilities in Osberstown Business Park, Naas, Co. Kildare. This is a varied hands-on role involving the servicing, repair, inspection, and maintenance of company vehicles, rail tools, small plant, and workshop equipment.
Salary: €50,000 per year. Working shift: Monday to Friday, 08.30 to 17.00.
Reporting To: Operations Director
Role Overview
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and repairing a wide range of equipment including company vans, rail tools, small plant machinery, generators, saws, grinders, hydraulic equipment, and occasional larger plant and trucks. The role also involves maintaining workshop records, organising materials and equipment, supporting fleet operations, and ensuring the workshop is maintained to a high safety and environmental standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Service, maintain, and repair company vehicles, primarily vans and light commercial vehicles.
- - Carry out maintenance and repairs on rail tools and small plant equipment including rail grinders, rail saws, generators, hydraulic packs, consaws, angle grinders, and associated equipment.
- - Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, petrol, diesel, and basic electrical faults.
- - Carry out preventative maintenance inspections and breakdown repairs.
- - Inspect tools and equipment before issue to site crews.
- - Maintain accurate service, inspection, and maintenance records.
- - Assist with sourcing and collecting parts, materials, and equipment when required.
- - Assist with maintaining stock levels of workshop consumables and spare parts.
- - Ensure correct storage and handling of fuels, oils, and hazardous materials in line with environmental and safety requirements.
- - Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment.
- - Assist with occasional maintenance of larger plant equipment including excavators, dumpers, MEWPs, and trucks with crane arms.
- - Work closely with operational teams to ensure equipment availability and reliability.
- - Comply with all company health, safety, and environmental procedures.
Skills & Experience - Essential
- Previous experience in a mechanical, workshop, plant fitter, or maintenance role.
- - Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving ability.
- - Experience working with petrol and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and small plant equipment.
- - Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- - Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- - Reliable and practical approach to work.
- - Good understanding of workplace health and safety practices.
- - Full clean driving licence.
Desirable
- - Experience working with rail tools or rail industry equipment.
- - Experience servicing small plant and workshop equipment.
- - Welding and fabrication experience.
- - Safe Pass.
- - Manual handling certification.
- - PTS (Personal Track Safety).
Qualifications
Relevant mechanical qualification, apprenticeship, trade certification, or equivalent hands-on experience preferred.

Working Conditions
This is primarily a workshop-based role with occasional site attendance as required. The role may involve manual handling and outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Overtime or emergency repair work may occasionally be required depending on operational demands.
