Overview of role:
UPMC are currently recruiting for Medical Registrar to join our team at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford. To provide care high quality medical care to patients admitted through the Medical Admissions Unit (MAU) and to any other patients in the hospital requiring medical review within the scope of a Medical Registrar at UPMC Whitfield Hospital. The post holder will: Offer medical consults on surgical patients as required. Manage the care of medical patients from admission to discharge under the direction of the Consultant Physician. Management of medical information to support insurance claims. Provide support in the management of claims being submitted to the relevant insurer for payment where required
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

To act under the supervision of the Medical Consultants in the provision of a Medicine service and to support the Consultants in their duties.

To admit patients to the Medical Floor.

To attend daily ward rounds with the medical team.
-
Take handover of patients so that continuity of care is ensured and immediate decisions are made and orders written.

To review patients on a regular basis in accordance with the plan of care made at the beginning of the shift and inform the consultant of any issues or problems.

Document review findings in clinical notes in a timely and legible manner.
- To participate in family meetings when required.

To respond to any adverse occurrences e.g. injuries, falls, sudden illnesses etc. suffered by patients, visitors or staff.

To contribute to quality improvement; risk management initiatives and policy development so that the overall Internal Medicine Service is of the highest quality and reflective of best practice.

To assist in the education of colleagues and staff.

To participate in work related projects at UPMC Whitfield Hospital.

To undertake any other duties that may be required, which could include assisting medical colleagues throughout the hospital and acting as a resource for more junior colleagues.

The post holder will work with all members of the multidisciplinary team, medical and non-medical to provide a seamless service for patients.

Diagnose and treat patients under the direction of the consultant, surgical and medical staff.
-
Will document patients’ assessment, history and physical on admission and write appropriate follow up comments in case notes in line with the Assessment of Patient Policy.

Complete a typed up detailed discharge summary for each patient to be approved by the Consultant Physician for submission to GPs and Insurers.

Will conduct daily re-assessment on in-patients as advised by the consultant and/or nursing staff

To be the lead in code blue and clinical emergency calls whilst carrying a pager on their person throughout their shift
- Carry out clinical procedures as requested by Consultants

Lead nursing staff in emergency/cardiac arrest procedures.

Discuss care with patients and relatives as appropriate.

To ensure discharge summaries are completed as per Discharge Policy requested by Consultants and/or nursing staff.

Further own knowledge of diagnosis and management.

Participate in programmes of research, education and training.
Management of medical information to support insurance claims. Provide support to the administration team prior to claims being submitted to the relevant insurer for payment where required.

Medication Management
-
Work in full compliance with all Medication Management Policies relevant to the role.

Verify each patient’s current medication list on admission to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Reconcile the patient’s stated or documented medication history with the original prescription order.
Accreditation
-
Work collaboratively with the organisation and the wider multidisciplinary team to prepare for JCI Accreditation standards, ensuring ongoing compliance with CHKS and HIQA requirements.
Training and Audit
-
To complete one Clinical Audit on an annual basis. Clinical Audit can be defined as ‘the systematic review and evaluation of current practice with reference to research based standards to improve patient care’ IMC

A team approach may be taken to the selected Clinical Audit, under the guidance of the Medical team.

All members of staff are expected to attend mandatory training sessions on an annual basis or as appropriate.

All member of staff are expected to participate in any in-house or external training or education sessions appropriate to their position.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
-
Registrar’s are required under their IMC Registration to participate in continuing professional development. From time to time the Hospital will host educational events which will generate CPD points.
Expectations

Lead the response to emergency situations across the hospital site, ensuring timely and effective clinical intervention.

Participate as an active member of the Deteriorating Patient Committee and contribute to Sepsis auditing and related quality‑improvement initiatives for same

Review patients, visitors, and staff following any incident or accident, providing appropriate clinical assessment and follow‑up.

Complete incident reporting in line with hospital policy, including accurate and timely completion of Accident and Incident forms.

Maintain comprehensive, legible, and contemporaneous case notes documenting all aspects of patient assessment, treatment, and clinical decision‑making.

Remain familiar with and adhere to all relevant hospital protocols, guidelines, and clinical pathways.

Engage in hospital‑wide initiatives aimed at improving the quality, safety, and efficiency of patient care.

Demonstrate cost‑effective clinical practice while ensuring that patient safety and quality of care are never compromised.

Qualifications & Experience:-
Applicants must be fully registered with Medical Council of Ireland.

Up to date certification in BLS & ACLS
- Preferable Qualification in PALS-Willingness to undertake same
- Experience at Registrar level in an acute Hospital setting.

Evidence of continuing professional development

Sufficient medical diagnostic and surgical experience and the capability to fulfil the functions of the post

Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Salary: €70,276 - €82,756 per annum based on a 39 hour week.
