Role summary
The National Concert Hall is seeking to appoint a strategic and highly organised Head of Operations. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the Head of Operations is responsible for the strategic leadership, management, and delivery of all operational, facilities, and event-related functions across the organisation. The role ensures that operational activities of the National Concert Hall are aligned with organisational strategy and delivered efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards of public service.
As a member of the Senior Management Team, the Head of Operations supports the COO in implementing strategic objectives, translating these into effective operational plans, policies, and performance outcomes. The role has full accountability for operational and capital budgets within remit, as well as the planning and delivery of capital projects, facilities management services, and organisational asset oversight.
The Head of Operations leads a multidisciplinary team and manages key service providers to ensure the successful delivery of all events, optimal use of resources, and a consistently high-quality customer experience. The role also holds responsibility for Health & Safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance, ensuring robust systems and governance are in place.
This is an important leadership role at a pivotal moment for the NCH. While the post is being recruited within the current organisational structure, the redevelopment period will bring changes to how operational responsibilities are organised and delivered. The Head of Operations will help shape that evolution, ensuring that the organisation has the structures, systems and capabilities needed to operate effectively through change.

The role of Head of Operations is a key position within the NCH and will be responsible for, but not limited to:
Strategic Leadership

Drive inspirational leadership to the Operations department, fostering a collaborative, innovative and inclusive culture.

Ensure the Operations department is sufficiently resourced with optimum skills and capabilities in place to deliver operational support for all NCH activities, at the National Concert Hall, NCH Discover Centre and nationally.

Build and maintain excellent working relationships with all internal departments to support integrated planning and delivery.

- Contribute to the development of NCH's overall organisational strategy and policy, ensuring alignment with the National Concert Hall's broader strategic framework, statutory obligations and long-term vision

Drive sustainability and environmental stewardship objectives across all facilities operations, embedding energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable procurement practices in line with public sector climate action commitments.

Event Management

Overall responsibility for the Operations team, which includes Front of House, Technical, Stage Management, Facilities Management, Security, Health & Safety, third party contract relationships with food and beverage and security providers.

Oversee the end-to-end event lifecycle, ensuring alignment between operational planning, resource allocation, and delivery outcomes
- Consultation with Promoters, Box Office, Stage and House management for specific requirements, costings and staffing levels

Liaison with NSOI and programming teams, at a strategic and operational level

Engage at both strategic and operational levels with key partners, including performance companies and catering providers, to ensure seamless event delivery
- Drive a culture of customer care and service excellence across all event-related functions
- Ensure effective coordination and performance of all event-related personnel, including internal teams and contracted providers
- Oversee workforce planning for events, including staff rostering, deployment, and management of Front-of-House staffing budgets
- Maintain operational readiness of all event infrastructure, including stage, lighting, and sound systems, driving continuous improvement and modernisation of technical capabilities to support world-class event delivery
- Ensure excellence in customer experience, including the safety, comfort, and engagement of patrons, performers, and visiting dignitaries, ensuring a premium visitor experience

Ensure compliance with Health & Safety requirements for all events, including risk assessments, emergency planning, and incident management
- Monitor and manage operational risks associated with live events, ensuring appropriate controls and escalation procedures are in place
Facilities Management

Provide strategic oversight of all facilities management functions, ensuring the effective operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the organisation's physical infrastructure.

Responsible for provision of accommodation and services to all internal resident organisations and day to day liaison and administration.

Lead the planning and delivery of capital works and maintenance programmes in partnership with the Office of Public Works, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and public sector standards.

Manage and optimise contracted facilities services, including security, cleaning, waste management, and technical systems, ensuring performance, compliance, and value for money.

Oversee mechanical and electrical systems, plant, and specialist stage technology, ensuring reliability, safety, and operational readiness.

Direct the lifecycle management of organisational assets, including maintaining accurate asset registers and planning for capital replacement and upgrades.
- Oversee the management, care, and maintenance of specialist assets, including musical instruments (pianos and organ), ensuring adherence to agreed policies and maintenance programmes.
- Coordinate with external specialists (e.g. instrument providers and technicians) to ensure optimal performance and preservation of key assets.
- Manage the organisation's art collections and cultural assets, maintaining accurate registers and coordinating loans in partnership with national institutions and ensuring appropriate environmental, security, and conservation standards are maintained for all collections.
Procurement & Governance

Lead on budget planning, management and reporting for Operational activities, ensuring effective allocation of resources and compliance with public sector policies.
- Management and development of maintenance contracts for facilities management services including security, cleaning, waste management along with plant, machinery and stage technology.

Preparation of budget for capital acquisition programmes.

Liaison with Accounts department in monitoring of all budgets under remit
- Hold responsibility for Health & Safety across the site, including the development and implementation of Safety Statements, risk assessments, hazard audits, and emergency procedures.
- Lead incident and accident reporting processes, including liaison with insurers and continuous improvement of risk mitigation measures.
- Manage fire safety systems and compliance in conjunction with relevant contractors and statutory bodies.
- Ensure full compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, and EU Directives relating to facilities and workplace safety.

The Person
The post holder will have a proven record of achievement at senior level, in a position with a similar range of responsibilities that demonstrates the necessary vision and leadership for this important role.
Key experience and Skills

Extensive knowledge of venue operations and facility management is required in a medium to large sized organisation, ideally in the music, arts or cultural sectors.

A track record of inspiring, leading and developing high-performing teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, creativity and accountability whilst maintaining constructive working relationships at all levels.

A minimum of five years' experience in either a similar role or equivalent senior management and leadership roles in medium to large sized organisations, ideally in the music and/or cultural sector.
