We are seeking a Principal Chemist on a permanent basis to join our team.
Job Purpose:
The Principal Chemist is a senior technical leader responsible for leading the site chemistry strategy and translating strategic priorities into clear technical direction, cross-functional execution, and capability development. This role combines strong scientific depth with the ability to influence, facilitate, and guide teams through complex technical and organisational challenges.
The Principal Chemist acts as a visible role model for engineers and chemists across the organisation, providing both technical and behavioural leadership. The role leads the Chemistry Community of Practice, brings teams together to solve problems, builds strong internal and external partnerships, and represents the site with credibility and professionalism in global forums and with customers.
Success in this role depends on leading through influence, building followership, and enabling others across functions to deliver results.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Lead and drive the site chemistry strategy, including Chem2030, translating strategic priorities into actionable plans, technical roadmaps, and measurable outcomes.
-
Lead the Chemistry Community of Practice by organising the monthly forum, setting agendas, driving discussion, tracking actions, sharing best practices, and influencing follow-through across the organisation.
-
Act as a visible technical and behavioural role model for engineers and chemists, providing coaching, mentorship, and proactive support across teams.
-
Facilitate cross-functional teams to diagnose complex issues, identify root cause, evaluate solution pathways, and drive decisions to closure.
-
Influence across functions, levels, and sites without direct authority to align stakeholders, remove barriers, and maintain momentum on key priorities.
-
Build trusted relationships with internal stakeholders, global partners, and external customers/suppliers, representing the site in a credible and collaborative manner.
-
Provide senior technical leadership across polymer science, formulation engineering, analytical chemistry, and material science activities from concept through commercial medical device application.
-
Lead and support experimental, analytical, and development activities in laboratory, pilot, multipurpose, and analytical testing environments.
-
Guide technical problem solving related to materials, formulations, analytical methods, and process challenges using structured, data-driven approaches.
-
Support scale-up, validation, technology transfer, and commercialisation activities to ensure robust and manufacturable solutions.
-
Author and review technical reports, development plans, protocols, investigations, and scientific justifications as required.
Education & Experience:
-
Hons bachelor’s degree (Level 8 or higher) in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
-
Significant relevant experience (typically 8–10+ years) in medical device, pharmaceutical, combination product, or similarly regulated environments.
-
Demonstrated experience leading technical strategy, functional roadmaps, or site-level capability initiatives, translating vision into execution and measurable outcomes.
-
Proven ability to lead through influence rather than authority, building alignment and driving results across functions, levels, and global teams.
-
Strong track record of facilitating cross-functional teams, enabling structured problem solving, driving decisions, and maintaining momentum on complex or ambiguous challenges.
-
Experience leading or contributing to a technical community, forum, or Community of Practice, including setting direction, engaging stakeholders, and ensuring follow-through on actions.
-
Excellent stakeholder management skills, with demonstrated ability to build trust and effective partnerships with internal teams, global collaborators, and external customers or suppliers.
-
Demonstrated proactive, collaborative, and solutions-oriented leadership style, with the ability to energise teams, influence behaviours, and act as a positive role model.
-
Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: polymer science, formulation engineering, analytical chemistry, material science, experimental development, or analytical development.
-
Proven experience taking materials, formulations, processes, or analytical methods from concept or early development through pilot-scale and into commercial medical device applications.
-
Hands-on experience in pilot, multipurpose, and/or analytical testing laboratory environments is highly desirable.
-
Strong track record in structured problem solving, root cause investigation, experimental design, and technical troubleshooting.
-
Excellent communication, facilitation, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical audiences.
-
Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or equivalent experience is advantageous.
