The Role
Alpha Tanks is seeking a motivated Graduate Mechanical Design Engineer to join our design team, supporting the design and fabrication of pressure vessels, bespoke tanks, and general engineering equipment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career to develop hands-on design experience in a specialist manufacturing environment, working alongside senior engineers on real projects from day one.
Key Responsibilities
● Support the design of pressure vessels, tanks, and bespoke fabricated equipment under the guidance of senior engineers
● Produce and update general arrangement and detailed fabrication drawings using 3D CAD (Solidworks) software
● Assist with design calculations and material/component specification
● Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including drawing registers, bills of materials, and revision records
● Liaise with the production team on the shop floor to understand manufacturing methods and support design-for-manufacture improvements
● Assist with the preparation of technical information for quotations and client enquiries
● Support quality documentation and inspection/test records as required for projects
● Participate in design reviews and contribute ideas for continuous improvement
● Develop knowledge of relevant codes and standards (e.g. PD 5500, ASME VIII, EN 13445) with training and mentoring provided
Requirements
● Degree (Level 7 or 8) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or currently completing final year studies
● 0–3 years' relevant experience; recent graduates are encouraged to apply
● Working knowledge of 3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent) gained through study or work placement
● A genuine interest in mechanical design, manufacturing, and fabrication
● Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills
● Willingness to learn, take direction, and work as part of a team
● Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
● Some exposure to pressure equipment, tank design, or general fabrication (e.g. through a placement or project) is an advantage but not essential
What Alpha Tanks Offers
● Structured mentoring and on-the-job training from experienced senior design engineers
● Hands-on exposure to real projects across pressure vessels, tanks, and bespoke fabrication
● A clear development path towards more senior design and project responsibility
● Supportive, team-based working environment
● Competitive graduate salary
