A long-established 3rd level Student Health Centre service has a new and exciting opportunity for a Nurse Graduate in Mental Health Nursing
Working with both the clinical support and supervision of our Consultant Psychiatrist, this is an exciting opportunity to play an integral role in a committed student health service team and to make a significant positive contribution to the mental and overall wellbeing of our vibrant student population.
Work Location: University of Galway
Contract: Permanent, Part-time (0.6 FTE role)
Reporting to: Medical Director, Student Health Unit, University of Galway
Working Hours: 24 hours weekly – on average (possibility of extra sessional commitment in term-time [Sep-May] and reduced sessional commitment in summertime [Jun-Aug]
Responsibilities will include:
- To practise nursing in line with the professional code as laid down by An Bord Altranais/NMBI and the organisations policies and procedures.
- To participate in assessment, planning and evaluations of the physical, psychological, sociocultural needs of the patient within the agreed framework for practise.
- To adopt a collaborative approach to patient care through the coordination of care and interventions in conjunction with other members of the student health team and with other relevant student support services staff.
- To maintain appropriate and accurate records regarding patient care.
- To follow appropriate role expectations and scope of practise within the student health service structure.
- To participate as a team member in all aspects of patient care and to receive work from, or delegate work to, other student health team members, as appropriate.
- To demonstrate a high degree of motivation and assume responsibility for professional self-development.
- To maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients and staff.
- To act as an advocate for the patients and to ensure that they are appropriately informed and counselled regarding their care needs.
- To participate in the setting of professional standards, understand and cooperate with the need to measure and audit the effectiveness of care delivery.
The successful candidate will meet the following requirements:
- Must have successfully completed the clinical and academic requirements of their BSc (Honours) Degree in Mental Health Nursing and be registered or eligible for registration with the psychiatric division of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Post-registration experience is highly desirable.
- Demonstrate a proven ability to establish solid working relationships within an organisation and with service users.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of the Mental Health Commission requirements.
- Demonstrate good knowledge and experience of health, safety, and other statutory regulations affecting a healthcare organization.
- Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development.

- Guarantee of 2 weeks leave annually around Christmas & New Year break (owing to university & practice closure at this time), along with reduced workload/sessional commitment during summertime months (Jun-Aug)
