Amazon Web Services (AWS) Core Networking team is looking for an Optical Network Development Engineer to join our Data Center Regional Network Engineering Services team.
AWS Core Networking is focused on building Data Centers and the network that allows Data Centers to function efficiently. They own the solutions that allow racks to be aggregated and Data Centers to be interconnected. Core Networking’s goal is to balance efficiency, performance and reliability to allow customers access to their applications and data.
As an Optical Network Development Engineer, you'll focus on the design and deployment of optical networking systems that connect our data centers. Your day might include collaborating with hardware and software engineers to evaluate new optical technologies, working through network architecture challenges with regional teams, or developing solutions that improve how data flows across our infrastructure. You'll participate in design reviews, contribute to technical documentation, and engage with cross-functional teams to ensure our optical networks meet the demanding requirements of AWS customers. Beyond routine tasks, you may find yourself troubleshooting complex network issues, exploring innovative approaches to network scalability, or mentoring colleagues as you grow in the role.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and deploy optical network solutions that support data center connectivity and scalability across AWS global infrastructure
- Collaborate with vendors and manufacturers to evaluate new optical hardware and software capabilities, and develop comprehensive implementation plans for network integration
- Develop and automate optical testing procedures to qualify optical modules and ensure they meet performance and reliability standards
- Partner with network operations teams to identify operational issues, troubleshoot problems, and implement improvements to quality and return merchandise authorization processes
- Create and maintain technical documentation that clearly communicates network designs, test results, and operational procedures to support team knowledge and best practices

- 4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience
- 4+ years of working in a Linux/Unix environment experience
- 1+ years of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell and/or Perl experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
