Title and Summary
Software Engineer II
Overview
The Virtual Card Management (VCM) team is part of the Commercial Transaction Management & Controls (CTMC) program within Mastercard's Commercial & New Payment Flows (CNPF) organization — making payments smarter and businesses stronger by providing faster, more secure, and more efficient commercial payment experiences globally.
VCM is responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of virtual and real card management, including authorization & clearing, spend controls, gateway & token management, event notifications, and multi-scheme virtual card capabilities. Our platform powers key products such as InControl (ICCP), Business Payment Controls (BPC, and Commercial Connect API — serving issuers, corporates, fintechs, and travel intermediaries worldwide.
We are looking for a Software Engineer II – Test Automation to join our Account Service team at Mastercard, working on tools and platforms that serve customers and developers globally. This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused on designing, building, and maintaining high-quality automated test frameworks and pipelines. You will be embedded in a feature team, working closely with software engineers to integrate test automation directly into the development workflow and ensure reliable, production-ready releases.
Our platform is built around exposing RESTful endpoints, and the bulk of our testing work centers on validating HTTP interactions — CRUD operations, request/response contracts, status codes, error handling, and API behaviour across distributed services.
Role
We demonstrate 'Mastercard Way' cultural values every day — own it, simplify it, sense of urgency, thoughtful risk-taking, unlock potential, and be inclusive — with a relentless focus on our customers. As a Software Engineer II on the VCM team, you will:
You will take end-to-end ownership of testing for assigned features, with a strong emphasis on automation. For each feature, you will:
- Understand requirements and design an automation strategy early in the development cycle
- Build automated test coverage across API and integration layers before release
- Perform targeted manual and exploratory testing to validate edge cases and real user scenarios
- Identify defects, work directly with developers to clarify issues, and drive fixes
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines to support continuous delivery
The primary focus of this role is automation and strong senior technical skills with the Java and or Javascript languages are essential. Taking ownership of QA tasks, driving them to completion is also part of the core responsibilities of this role.
Responsibility
- Own test automation for assigned features as an embedded member of a feature team
- Design and implement automated tests using Java, REST Assured (API testing), Playwright (backend service testing), and Cucumber (BDD)
- Validate RESTful APIs across the full range of HTTP interactions — CRUD operations, response contracts, status codes, authentication flows, and error scenarios
- Build and maintain robust, scalable test frameworks that integrate seamlessly into Jenkins CI/CD pipelines
- Ensure new features are covered by reliable, maintainable automation before every release
- Monitor test stability, triage failures, and continuously improve test quality and pipeline performance
- Contribute to shared automation tooling and best practices across the team
- Perform exploratory and manual testing where needed to complement automation coverage
All About You

- Experience with Cucumber for BDD-style test design
- Solid understanding of Jenkins and CI/CD pipeline integration
- Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, HTTP methods, and CRUD-based architectures
- Experience testing distributed systems and microservices-style backends
- Ability to work closely and collaboratively with software engineers in a feature team setting

- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve routine issues through log analysis, problem reproduction, and application of documented solutions and security patches
