The Irish Times - Journalism Graduate Programme

THE COMPANY

The Irish Times is Ireland's leading independent quality news and information publishing organisation. The core activity of The Irish Times has evolved from six-day print publishing to a seven-day multi-platform news publisher with a market-leading position in the development of subscriptions. We focus on producing quality journalism and information for our users under the principles of The Irish Times. The company is owned by The Irish Times Trust and is managed by The Irish Times DAC.

At a time when access to accurate, independent and trusted journalism has never been more important, this programme offers an opportunity to contribute to work that informs, enriches and serves the public. You will gain hands-on experience in digital publishing, visual media and reporting, and be supported with mentorship and tailored training, helping you to grow both professionally and personally.

THE ROLE

The Irish Times is now recruiting digital journalists and reporters for its two-year Journalism Graduate Programme. This opportunity is aimed at graduates and early-career journalists who are interested in building a career in high-quality journalism across digital and print platforms. Successful candidates will be appointed to paid positions on our entry-level journalist pay scale.

We are seeking two types of candidate: those with a talent for digital journalism, including video production and presentation, graphics and data visualisation, social media and digital production; and those with strong reporting, writing and editing skills, who are interested in working across news, business, sport, culture and lifestyle areas.

Successful candidates will gain valuable experience in a professional newsroom environment, developing their editorial, digital and reporting skills while contributing to trusted journalism for audiences across Ireland and beyond.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Research, write and edit accurate, engaging content for digital and print platforms.
Support the production of journalism across areas such as news, business, sport, culture and lifestyle.
Develop and produce digital content, which may include video, graphics, data visualisation, social media and digital production.
Apply strong editorial judgment, accuracy and fairness when covering stories and developing content.
Work to deadlines while maintaining high standards of writing, editing and presentation.
Build knowledge of audiences, platforms, SEO, social media and digital storytelling.
Collaborate with editors, reporters and wider newsroom colleagues across The Irish Times Group.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

A graduate or early-career journalist with a strong interest in journalism and the media.
Excellent writing, reporting and editing skills, with the ability to produce clean, accurate copy.
Strong editorial judgment, language skills and attention to detail.
A good working knowledge of current affairs and/or other subject areas covered by The Irish Times.
Interest in digital journalism, including areas such as video, social media, digital production, graphics or data visualisation.
Ability to work well under deadline pressure and adapt in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
Initiative, curiosity, flexibility and motivation to develop a career in journalism.

APPLICATION TASK

As part of your application, please complete one of the following tasks, depending on the graduate stream you are applying for.

Reporting, Writing & Editing

Submit a written piece of no more than 500 words on a news story, issue or trend that has captured your interest. Tell us why it matters, who it affects and how you would develop it for The Irish Times. We are looking for strong editorial judgment, clear writing and original thinking. Please include this story in the cover note section.

Digital Journalism (Video, Social, Graphics & Data)

Submit an original piece of digital content that showcases your storytelling skills. This could include a short video (maximum two minutes), social media content, an infographic, data visualisation or another digital storytelling format. Include a brief explanation (maximum 150 words) outlining your editorial approach and intended audience.

How to submit

Please include your written submission or explanatory note in the Cover Note section of the application form. If you are submitting video or other hosted digital content, please include a link in your Cover Note or email it to [email protected], clearly stating your name and "Journalism Graduate Programme" in the subject line.

If you wish to be considered for both streams, please ensure you complete both application tasks.

Please include your submission in the Cover Note section of the application form and ensure it is submitted before 5pm on Tuesday 14th of July.
