As an Electrical Design Engineer, you sit at the heart of everything we do here at Capital Switchgear. Our growing team of Engineers work on innovative, technically challenging electrical system designs for LV switchgear and control panel projects.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, and working closely with the Projects team and Production team, you will ensure the successful design and execution of multifaceted switchgear projects. Roles and Responsibilities
Electrical Design and Engineering
- Create and deliver innovative electrical designs for LV switchgear and control panel projects from initial concept through to completion.
- Develop detailed electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, control circuits and associated design documentation in line with project requirements and applicable standards.
- Interpret customer specifications, drawings and technical requirements and translate these into practical, manufacturing-ready designs for Production.
- Select appropriate electrical components and equipment, considering technical requirements, availability, reliability, safety and cost.
- Work closely with the Projects team to clarify project specifications, ensuring that our designs meet client expectations every time.
- Identify and resolve electrical design issues, making appropriate revisions where required.
- Apply relevant IEC, BS, EN and other applicable standards and regulations to all designs.
Engineering Documentation
- Produce accurate and efficient Bills of Materials (BOMs) using engineering and ERP tools.
- Prepare and maintain schematics, layouts, specifications and other technical documentation.
- Ensure engineering documentation is accurate, complete, controlled and in line with requirements.
- Provide technical input to the Test team to support the development of testing procedures and documentation.
- Prepare client-specific technical documentation as required on completion of each phase / project.
- Ensure design changes and revisions are accurately reflected in all relevant documentation.
Liaison with Production and Quality
- Work closely with Electrical and Mechanical Production teams to ensure designs are practical, accurate and manufactured in accordance with specifications.
- Support electrical testing, validation and commissioning activities as required.
- Prepare for and participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), providing technical guidance and supporting colleagues and clients with test documentation.
- Analyse results and identify opportunities to improve product performance, reliability and safety.
- Investigate and resolve design and manufacturing issues in collaboration with relevant teams.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective actions relating to product or manufacturing challenges.
- Raise and investigate concerns if materials, workmanship, output or designs do not meet the required standard – always ask the question.
Liaison with Project Managers and Clients
- Work closely with the assigned Project Manager to ensure engineering deliverables meet client requirements and agreed timelines.
- Provide regular updates on design progress, technical issues and potential project risks.
- Respond to technical queries and provide appropriate engineering support to the Projects team.
- Participate in technical meetings with clients, suppliers and other stakeholders as required.
- Attend meetings as needed to build positive, professional relationships with clients and provide technical input where appropriate.
- Identify and communicate potential issues at an early stage to support successful delivery.
Sales Support
- Provide technical input to Requests for Quotation and tender submissions as required.
- Assist with technical queries during the pre-sales process where required.
Health & Safety
- Carry out all Engineering activities safely, following Company procedures, safety controls, risk assessments and safe working practices.
- Consider Health & Safety throughout the design process, ensuring products are designed with safety and compliance at their core.
- Maintain an awareness of the hazards associated with electrical switchgear products.
- Use tools, equipment, PPE and manual handling techniques correctly and only undertake moving/lifting activities for which you have been trained and authorised.
- Stop work and immediately report any unsafe conditions, defects or potential risks.
- Keep your work area clean, organised and safe, taking a "clean as you go" approach.
- Report unsafe conditions, damaged goods, equipment defects or other potential risks immediately.
Continuous Improvement and Industry Awareness
- Identify opportunities to improve project delivery, customer satisfaction and departmental efficiency.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of project management processes, systems and reporting.
- Maintain awareness of industry developments, Health & Safety requirements and applicable International (IEC), British (BS), European (EN) and other standards relevant to the business.
General

Qualifications & Skills
Must have
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent industry experience).
- Proven experience (3+ years) in a relevant Engineering role, ideally in the switchgear, electrical or power industries.
- Strong understanding of switchgear systems, installation, testing, and commissioning processes.
- Proficient in the use of CAD software and other relevant design tools.
- Knowledge of electrical safety standards and best practices, and familiarity with international standards and regulations in the electrical industry.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to deliver multiple engineering projects, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
- Committed, resilient professional who shows integrity and drive in everything they do.
- Full driving licence, fluency in English.
Nice to have
- Priority will be given to candidates who are eligible to work in Ireland (i.e. who already have a work permit if needed.)
- Experience in the use of EPLAN is a distinct advantage.
- Familiarity with project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project, Smartsheets, or equivalent).
Pay: €53,000.00-€62,000.00 per year
