Senior Bridge Engineer – Transport

Location: Cork, Dublin or Galway

Purpose & Scope of the Role:

As a Senior Bridge Engineer within our Transport and Civils division, you will lead the delivery of complex bridge projects across Ireland and the UK. This role involves managing design packages for major highways, rail, and urban infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with Irish and UK standards, and maintaining technical excellence throughout the project lifecycle. You will act as a technical lead within multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior engineers, and uphold quality assurance and BIM procedures. This position offers opportunities for global collaboration and career progression within an international consultancy.

Your Impact in This Position:

In the short term, you will deliver design packages for large-scale transport projects, mentor designers, and support project management and resource planning. Over the medium term, you will take ownership of new projects, managing them through inception, design, construction, and handover, while driving innovation and maintaining compliance with the latest standards. Longer term, you will progress into senior leadership within the Transport and Civils sector, shaping strategy, identifying new opportunities, and strengthening client relationships through a portfolio of successfully delivered projects.

Core Capabilities:

Bridge Design Standards and Structural Analysis:

The candidate should have excellent knowledge of the structural Eurocodes and Irish and UK bridge design standards (DMRB) and a strong background and understanding of the analysis of bridges and structures. The candidate should be able to demonstrate their proficiency using structural analysis software for analysis and design/assessment purposes. Experience in the use of Midas Civil would be beneficial.

Bridges & Structures Design Expertise:

The candidate should bring deep technical knowledge and hands-on experience in the design / assessment of a variety of bridges and civil structures, including reinforced and prestressed concrete structures and steel / steel composite bridges. The candidate should be able to mentor junior colleagues and provide guidance and assistance in relation to the technical delivery of bridge designs.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement:

The candidate will be a technical lead for the bridge team in internal multi-disciplinary design teams. This will involve the coordination of their design package with other disciplines and teams, both internal and external to RPS. The candidate will also act as a technical contact for clients, local authorities, and external consultants — taking the lead in design meetings, resolving technical queries, and translating complex engineering concepts into clear, actionable outcomes. Therefore, the Candidate should have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Technical Documentation and Contract Knowledge:

The role requires the production of high-quality technical documentation (e.g. technical acceptance, approval in principle) and reports that meet internal standards and external regulatory requirements. The candidate will have a good working knowledge of typical contract forms and in particular the GCCC suite of Public Works Contracts. You will have considerable experience in the preparation of contract documents for transportation infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on bridge design / rehabilitation projects.

Qualifications & Experience:

Level 8 Honours Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience in bridges and structures engineering.
Working towards Chartered status (CEng, MIEI, MICE, MIStructE or equivalent).

Desirable: Level 9 Master’s in Civil/Structural Engineering, Chartered Engineer status, experience in bridge inspections, project management, and knowledge of NEC contracts.

Working Environment:

This role is based in Dublin, Cork, Galway or Kilkenny, with hybrid working and agile office arrangements offered as standard. Office attendance will be balanced to meet project and client needs, while supporting flexible working for work‑life balance. Travel to client sites, planning authority meetings and project locations across Ireland will be required on an occasional basis.
