Job Description

Job Title: Medical Physicist

Department: Radiotherapy

Reports to: Chief Medical Physicist

Overall Purpose of Job

We will provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the centre of all we do.

The Medical Physicist conducts all aspects of Radiation Oncology physics including equipment calibration and commissioning, clinical support, maintenance of appropriate quality assurance for equipment and treatment delivery, compliance with radiation safety and licensing issues.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

Responsible for the systematic measurement, documentation, and assurance of the physical and dosimetric aspects of all radioactive sources/radiation producing equipment used in Radiation Oncology. Performs acceptance testing and commissioning of all treatment-related equipment. This includes calibration of all radiation producing sources and maintenance of all information for their appropriate use. Develops and documents performance specifications, testing, tolerances, and frequency of testing for all therapy equipment.

Responsible for the arrangement of all periodic servicing and Preventative Maintenance Inspections of all radiation producing equipment and treatment planning systems.

Maintains a comprehensive quality assurance program that ensures patients are provided tumor localisation, radiation treatment, and dose distributions as prescribed. This includes assurance of the accuracy of treatment unit parameters.

Responsible for the development of treatment plans, acquisition and storage of data for treatment plans, calculation of dose distributions and machine settings for treatment delivery.

Provides consultation to the Radiation Oncologist on the physical and radiobiological aspect of treatment. Translates the desired treatment plan into a set of instructions for radiation therapists to execute.

Responsible for the in-vivo dose measurement and use of measuring devices for verification of dose delivery to patients. Provides interpretation/consultation to the Radiation Oncologist on basis of in-vivo dosimetry.

Directs the design, fabrication, and measurement of treatment beam modifiers and treatment aids.

Responsible to obtain and disseminate information pertaining to current practices within the field of Radiation Oncology Physics.

Initiates and/or collaborates on related research projects with other Medical Physicists and members of the Radiation Oncology department.

In conjunction with the Chief Medical Physicist, responsible for the initiation and implementation of new clinical practices and Medical Physics programmes.

Performs organisation and administration skills in the clinical practice of Radiation Oncology Physics. This includes decision in equipment usage/selection/replacement, physics and dosimetry staff requirements, assignments and recruitment, program operation, budget preparation, and continuing review of program's policies and procedures.

Responsible for the compliance with EPA (ORM) Rules and Regulations.

Other responsibilities as directed by the Chief Medical Physicist.

Management responsibilities

The Medical Physicist may be assigned a lead role(s) in various aspects of the Medical Physics service provision by the Chief Medical Physicist.

Duties may include whole project management, staff management and reporting to Chief Physicist, Departmental Management team or Senior Hospital Management as appropriate.

Person Specification

Qualifications

PhD or MSc from an accredited program in Medical Physics or related field.

Experience

Experience with 3-D conformal radiotherapy and treatment planning systems is required, and radiosurgery and IMRT are highly desirable.

Experience and knowledge of calibration of linear accelerators and periodical quality assurance.

Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge:

Assessment, Clinical Reasoning and Documentation

Provide consultation and advice on all aspects of the treatment pathway based on current peer-reviewed evidence. Document all such advice in the patient's chart as appropriate.

Protocols

Read and become familiar with all necessary protocols. Assist in the creation of new protocols and the editing of existing protocols.

Communication

Maintain open and clear communication with all multidisciplinary members of the department.

Teamwork

Work closely with all members of the department and maintain good working relationships.

Personal Competencies

All posts in Beacon Hospital require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager or Hospital management.
