The Opportunity
The Linux and Database team is well established within the IT Infrastructure Department and is responsible for the organisation’s extensive Linux, Oracle, PostGres and Microsoft SQL Server solutions. A particular focus of this team is to ensure the reliability of the various platforms whilst driving performance and functional improvements and new delivery mechanisms including virtualisation and cloud services.
The Linux Administrator will assist in the development and support of EirGrid’s Linux estate on Physical and Virtual machines which underpin the organisation’s corporate functions and mission-critical power system operation and market functions.
The focus of the role will be to support major programs of work to upgrade and implement in premise and cloud-based systems.
The successful applicant will contribute to the overall success of Eirgrid by working as part of a team of IT professionals, undertaking Linux administration duties and driving project delivery and solution optimisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Linux & Database Team Lead in delivering on project targets and operational KPIs
- Install, configure, and maintain Linux operating systems Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle Linux environments.
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure high availability and reliability of Linux-based infrastructure
- Configure network interfaces (NICs), Ethernet devices, and manage ILO for HP servers
- Manage storage, including SAN, NAS, RAID, multipathing, zoning, and LVM
- Diagnose and troubleshoot software, hardware, and network issues to identify root causes
- Manage package installations, updates, and maintain software inventories
- Configure, monitor, and manage backups and disaster recovery plans
- Ensure system uptime, compliance, and handle user access management
- Develop and maintain automation scripts (Bash, Python) for routine tasks and monitoring
- Handle change management processes, system upgrades, and patch deployments
- Implement and manage OS firewalls, security configurations, and vulnerability management
- Configure and troubleshoot virtualization environments (e.g., VMware).
- Automate system administrative tasks using scripting languages such as Bash or Python to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
- Evaluate and recommend hardware and software upgrades to improve system performance and scalability.
- Provide in-depth troubleshooting and issue resolution for the Red Hat and Oracle Linux ecosystem.
- Investigate root causes of issues and escalate to engineering or vendor support when needed.
- Support the asset management of Linux systems including inventory maintenance, warranty management, vendor support and configuration backups
- Oversee the development of internal procedures, processes and documentation
- Promote high standards of platform design, operation and availability and ensure that support capabilities during and outside normal working hours are maintained
- Liaise with the EirGrid’s Governance & Planning team and business representatives to understand business needs and the wider context of developing and delivering IT solutions
- Provide effective stakeholder management of both internal and external stakeholders including strategic vendors and service providers
- Proficiency in capacity planning and disaster recovery planning
Provide training and mentoring to junior staff

About You
The successful candidate will have:
- An IT degree or recognised qualification in a relevant technical discipline
- 7+ years’ experience in delivering and/or operating critical business solutions
- Proficiency in Red Hat and Oracle Linux OS environments
- Expertise in networking protocols (TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, VPN) and firewall management
- Strong skills in SAN, NAS, RAID configurations, multipathing, and LVM
- In-depth experience with Bash and Python scripting for automation
- Hands-on experience with VMware and other virtualization technologies
- Familiarity with TCP/IP, VLANs, load balancing, and high availability configurations
- Installation & configuration of Operating system, ILO
- CPU Utilization, Memory Management

Certifications in Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
- Effective communicator, both in verbal and written communications supported by excellent customer facing skills
- Successful track record in delivering IT projects
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
