ROLE PURPOSE
The Semi-Skilled Construction Operative is responsible for supporting the delivery of construction, refurbishment, maintenance, and groundworks projects across the company's residential, commercial, and accommodation portfolio.
The postholder will undertake a range of practical construction and maintenance duties, operate plant and machinery where qualified to do so, assist skilled tradespersons and contribute to the successful completion of projects to the required quality, safety and performance standards.
The role requires a proactive individual with a strong work ethic, good practical skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Construction & Refurbishment Works
- Carry out general construction, maintenance and refurbishment works.
- Assist carpenters, plumbers, electricians and other tradespersons as required.
- Complete demolition, site clearance and preparation work.
- Install insulation, plasterboard, timber studwork, flooring and internal finishes.
- Assist with painting, decorating and snagging works.
- Carry out minor repairs and maintenance across company properties.
- Read and interpret basic construction drawings and specifications.
GROUNDSWORKS & EXTERNAL WORKS
- Carry out excavation, drainage and site preparation works.
- Assist with foundations, kerbing, paving and concrete works.
- Undertake landscaping, fencing and boundary works.
- Operate grounds maintenance equipment.
- Maintain external areas to a high standard.
- Assist with site set-up and temporary works installations.
PLANT & MACHINERY OPERATION
- Operate plant and machinery where appropriately trained and authorised.
- Conduct daily pre-use inspections of plant and equipment.
- Ensure machinery is operated safely and in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
- Report defects, breakdowns or safety concerns immediately.
- Maintain plant, tools and equipment in good working order.
HEALTH, SAFETY & COMPLIANCE
- Comply with all Health & Safety legislation, company policies and site rules.
- Participate in toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Always wear appropriate PPE.
- Report accidents, incidents, near misses and hazards.
- Maintain a safe and tidy working environment.
- Assist with risk assessments and safe systems of work where required.
PROPERTY MAINTENANCE & FACILITIES SUPPORT
- Support the upkeep and maintenance of residential and commercial properties.
- Respond to maintenance requests as directed.
- Assist with furniture installation, removals and property setups.
- Carry out routine inspections and identify maintenance issues.
- Support emergency and reactive maintenance works when required.
TEAMWORK & COMMUNICATION
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors and management.
- Communicate effectively regarding project progress and site issues.
- Always represent the company professionally.
- Contribute positively to team objectives and project deadlines.
REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & Other requirements
- Minimum 2 years' experience in construction, maintenance, groundworks or a related environment.
- Good practical knowledge of construction methods and materials.
- Experience using power tools and construction equipment.
- Full clean driving licence and ability to travel between sites across the North-West region.
- Safe Pass Card and Manual Handling Certificate.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work independently.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work to deadlines.
