Key responsibilities
- Serve retail and trade customers at the trade counter, providing a professional and efficient service.
- Process cash sales, customer orders, payments, invoices, and associated documentation accurately.
- Respond to telephone, email enquiries, and support the office with tele sales activities.
- Identify sales opportunities, follow up on enquiries, and actively generate sales from both new and existing customers.
- Provide product information, pricing, and availability to customers.
- Manage procurement requirements for the Group through an assigned key supplier.
- Monitor purchasing requirements, stock availability, outstanding orders, and expected delivery dates.
- Coordinate with suppliers, logistics providers, and individual branches to ensure orders are placed and delivered in a timely manner.
- Keep branches informed of product availability, delivery schedules, delays or other issues affecting their orders.
- Process and check supplier invoices, purchase orders, and relevant paperwork, resolving discrepancies where necessary.
- Work closely with the sales, purchasing, accounts, and warehouse teams to ensure orders are processed correctly and efficiently.
- Assist with general office administration and operational duties as required.
- Provide practical support to the warehouse during busy periods, staff absences or when additional assistance is needed.
- Maintain accurate records and follow all company procedures relating to pricing, credit control, stock, health and safety, and order processing.
Skills and experience
- Previous experience in a trade counter, sales, purchasing, customer service, or operational role would be beneficial.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Commercially aware, with the confidence to identify and develop sales opportunities.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage several priorities at the same time.
- High level of accuracy when processing orders, invoices, and purchasing documentation.
- Comfortable dealing with suppliers, branch personnel, customers, and logistics providers.
- Good general IT skills and experience using sales, stock, or purchasing systems.
- Knowledge of timber, panel products or the wider building materials sector would be an advantage.
- A flexible, team-focused approach and a willingness to support other areas of the business when required.
