Summary of Role
The dental nurse is responsible for providing excellence in service through the efficient management of patients through the practice. The dental nurse will work in close partnership with the dental team, take instruction from the dentist and practice manager, and have the ability to take ownership and responsibility for clinical policies and procedures in the practice; as set out by Dental Care Ireland and other regulatory bodies, including the Dental Council of Ireland.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Working closely with the principal dentist, providing chair side assistance to ensure the professional, accurate and timely completion of treatments and relevant records as required for patient care.
- Ensuring clinical tests and audits are completed as required on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
- Ensure that all tasks are fully compliant with the scope of practice as set out by the Dental Council of Ireland.
- Keep the clinical areas and all equipment and instruments clean, tidy and sterile as appropriate, according to the practice’s health and safety policy, manufacturers’ instructions and the Code of Practice relating to infection control as set out by the Dental Council of Ireland.
- Ensure that adequate stock levels are maintained for the smooth running of the practice, and inform appointed staff member when stock levels diminish.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Ensure that any incident relating to patient safety is notified to the Dental Surgeon and is recorded.
- Liaise with reception team to ensure smooth patient communication and transfer of records.
- Work with the practice manager to assist in training new members of the clinical support team as and when required.
- Working with the practice manager in handling and resolving patient complaints, if they arise in line with company guidelines.
- Liaising with the practice manager on any clinical duties.
- Assisting the practice manager to achieve agreed company KPIs.
- Reporting any local facilities issues to the practice manager.
- Assisting with reception duties where required.
Experience/Qualifications:
- 1+ years' experience or dental nurse course student.
- Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
- Fluent in written and oral English.
- Must have working knowledge in use of Microsoft Office 2000 or later, particularly Excel and Word, Internet and mail.
Capabilities
- Understanding of basic dental terminology & ability to chart dental records.
- Knowledge of basic dental materials and the use of these materials in each specific area of dentistry.
- Knowledge of all relevant dental instruments as covered in the Dental Nursing curriculum. This includes the basics in Oral surgery, Endodontics, Periodontics, Orthodontics and Restorative dentistry,
- Understanding and implementation of the sterile environment and techniques,
- Competent chairside assistance skills.
