This is an ‘as and when’ role with flexible hours, providing cover leave. Candidates should be available to work approximately one shift per week (4–8 hours) when required, with occasional periods of consecutive-day cover. No minimum hours or regular work pattern can be guaranteed.
The Irish Heart Foundation is Ireland’s national charity dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Every hour someone in Ireland suffers a stroke and everyday hundreds of people are diagnosed with heart conditions. The lives of these people are often cut tragically short. Many are left with disabilities. Almost 10,000 people die from heart conditions and stroke every year in Ireland making cardiovascular disease one of the nation’s biggest killers. We work to turn this around – support people to live healthy lives and avoid cardiovascular disease, but also to support people living with heart conditions and stroke.
Our support services have grown rapidly in recent years in response to massive unmet needs among stroke survivors and people living with heart conditions. Their purpose is to enable everyone affected by cardiovascular disease to live the fullest and healthiest lives possible.
Our team currently is approx. 130 employees and up to 150 volunteers working towards the Foundation’s vision of a future where no hearts are broken by preventable heart disease.
The Role
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, but it is often symptomless. The Mobile Health Unit (MHU) offers free confidential heart health checks to the public including blood pressure and pulse checks which are provided by our health check nurses in the unit’s private consultation rooms. It travels nationwide specifically focusing on disadvantaged groups, visiting various locations in communities such as farmer’s marts and the Men’s Sheds.
The driver of the Mobile Health Unit will act as an ambassador for the Irish Heart Foundation interacting with the public and working as part of the Mobile Health Unit team. The person will be responsible for arranging secure parking when out on site, managing the queues for those awaiting health checks and managing maintenance of the Unit. This work will involve travel and overnight stays across Ireland.
This position is offered on an “as and when” contract, providing flexibility to work based on programme demand, event schedules, and availability of Health Check bookings across Ireland. Hours are not guaranteed and may vary week to week depending on organisational needs.
This role would suit a person with excellent communication skills who enjoys meeting new people from diverse backgrounds and who is willing to opportunistically inform members of the public about the Mobile Health Unit service and the wider Irish Heart Foundation’s work. The service typically runs Monday to Friday with occasional weekends.
Key Responsibilities
· Represent the Irish Heart Foundation in a professional and proactive manner, engaging positively with site contacts and clients. Manage queues as required and provide excellent customer service at all times.
- Drive the MHU to nationwide locations according to the assigned booking.
- Ensure that the MHU is always parked safely.
- Ensure safe access to/from the MHU for the public.
· Ensure the Mobile Health Unit (MHU) is set up in accordance with standard operating procedures, including the safe and secure installation of all equipment, furniture, presentation materials, and power supplies.
- Assisting the Health Check Nurses with IT setup and Wi-Fi connectivity if required.
- Responsible for the service and maintenance of the vehicle – lighting, air conditioning, heating and cleaning when required during the booking.
- Inform Health check admin team when stock is low on the MHU– Information leaflets and other materials.
- Responsible for safe storage of equipment on vehicle during transit.
- Any other duties assigned by the manager, as required.
Skills and Experience Required
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Full clean driving license.
- Fluent English speaker.
- Must be over 23 years of age, for insurance.
- At least 10 years’ driving experience including on national and rural roads.
- Previous experience of working with the public is essential.Previous experience of driving large/commercial vehicles advantageous.
- Proven experience of national route planning/use of navigation application to reach locations within required timelines.
- Proficiency in IT systems including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work calmly in a busy environment, engaging clients, and managing queues.
- Good organisational skills with the ability able to work to deadlines.
· Knowledge of and experience in complying with organisational health and safety policies and procedures, including lone working and driving for work requirements.

- Be familiar with and follow all health & safety protocols and risk management controls and ensure that appropriate steps are taken to protect the safety, health and welfare of oneself and that of staff, volunteers and people using the services that come under the areas of responsibility for this position.
