Part-Time Swimming Teachers
Employer: Laois Leisure
Locations: Portlaoise and Portarlington
Working hours: Monday to Friday, 10:15 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
Normal weekly hours: 16.25 hours
Working pattern: Part-time and term-time
Rate of Pay
The hourly rate will depend on the successful candidate’s age:
- Age 20 and over: €15.15 gross per hour
- Age 19: €13.74 gross per hour
- Age 18: €12.32 gross per hour
Each rate is €1 per hour above the applicable statutory National Minimum Wage age rate in effect from 1 January 2026.
About the Position
Laois Leisure is seeking enthusiastic, dependable and child-focused individuals to join our team as Part-Time Swimming Teachers.
This term-time position offers working hours that fit conveniently within the school day. It may suit candidates looking for part-time work that broadly aligns with the school calendar.
Successful candidates will help deliver safe, enjoyable and inclusive swimming lessons for children. They will support children in developing water confidence, swimming ability and essential water-safety skills.
Applicants must be available to work across both Laois Leisure locations in Portlaoise and Portarlington.
Mandatory Training Dates
Full training will be provided to successful candidates.
Candidates must be available to attend training from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on all four of the following dates:
- Friday, 7 August 2026
- Friday, 14 August 2026
- Friday, 21 August 2026
- Friday, 28 August 2026
Attendance at all four training days is an essential requirement of the position.

Applicants must:
- Enjoy working with children
- Be confident and comfortable in a swimming-pool environment
- Have good communication and interpersonal skills
- Be patient, encouraging, dependable and punctual
- Be willing to complete all required training
- Be available for all four mandatory training dates
- Be available Monday to Friday from 10:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Be available to work at both the Portlaoise and Portarlington centres
- Have reliable means of attending both locations
- Be willing to undergo Garda vetting
- Be committed to child safeguarding, equality, inclusion, and health and safety
- Have the legal right to work in Ireland
Previous experience in swimming instruction, coaching, childcare, education, sport or leisure services would be an advantage but is not essential.
Garda Vetting and Pre-Employment Checks
Any offer of employment will be conditional upon:
- Satisfactory Garda vetting
- Satisfactory references
- Verification of identity and the right to work in Ireland
- Completion of required child-safeguarding and organisational training
- Verification of relevant qualifications, where applicable
Successful candidates must not begin relevant work with children until the required Garda-vetting process and other pre-employment checks have been satisfactorily completed.
