We’re looking for a part-time Chef or Commis Chef (20-25 hours per week) to join our growing food team at Copper + Straw. You'll be working alongside our team in our production kitchen, preparing food for our four speciality coffee shops. We require someone who has a visa that permits them to work full-time hours if needed down the line.
This is a hands-on role that would suit someone with 1–2 years’ kitchen experience who is passionate about making great food, enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, and is looking for an opportunity to grow as the business expands. The role will start at 20–25 hours per week, with the expectation that hours and responsibilities will increase as the food operation grows.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Preparing sandwiches, sausage rolls, baked goods, overnight oats, yoghurt pots, and more.
- Cooking, assembling, portioning, labelling, and packaging food to a high standard.
- Supporting daily and weekly food production schedules to meet shop demand.
- Following recipes and SOPs to ensure consistency across all products.
- Managing basic kitchen tasks such as weighing, measuring, mixing, baking, and cooking ingredients.
- Supporting stock management: checking deliveries, rotating stock, monitoring use-by dates, and helping to minimise waste.
- Ensuring a clean, organised and hygienic kitchen at all times, following HACCP guidelines.
- Assisting with developing and testing new menu items and specials alongside the Head Chef.
- Maintaining clear records as needed (e.g., temperature logs, production sheets). Communicating with the Head Chef on any issues, ideas, or improvements.
Skills and Experience Required
- 1–2 years’ experience in a kitchen, café, bakery, or food production setting.
- HACCP Level 1 certification (Level 2 preferred but not required)
- Good basic cooking and prep skills, with an eye for presentation and quality.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a small team.
- A strong work ethic, attention to detail, and pride in your work.
