The Role
Alpha Tanks is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer / Project Co-Ordinator to lead the design and delivery of pressure vessels, bespoke tanks, and general engineering fabrication projects from initial concept through to commissioning. This is a dual-focused role, combining hands-on mechanical design authority with full project management responsibility for a portfolio of client contracts.
You will act as the technical and commercial lead on projects, working closely with clients, the shop floor, and suppliers to ensure designs are fit for purpose, compliant with relevant codes and standards, and delivered on time and to budget.
Key Responsibilities
● Lead the mechanical design of pressure vessels, storage tanks, and bespoke fabricated equipment, ensuring compliance with relevant codes (e.g. PD 5500, ASME VIII, EN 13445) and client specifications
● Take full project management ownership of assigned contracts — scope, programme, cost, quality, and client communication from order through to handover
● Produce and review general arrangement drawings, detailed fabrication drawings, and design calculations (using CAD- Solidworks, and design software as appropriate)
● Liaise directly with clients to interpret requirements, manage design reviews, and resolve technical queries throughout the project lifecycle
● Coordinate with production, quality, and supply chain teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and materials/components are procured on schedule
● Manage project budgets and timelines, identifying and mitigating risks, and reporting progress to senior management
● Support tendering and estimating activities, including technical input to quotations for new enquiries
● Ensure all documentation (design files, material certification, test and inspection records) meets quality and regulatory requirements
● Liaise with third-party inspection bodies, notified bodies, and regulatory authorities as required
Requirements
● Degree (Level 8) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
● Minimum 4 years' experience in mechanical design within pressure equipment, tank manufacturing, or general engineering fabrication
● Proven track record managing projects from design through to delivery, including budget and schedule ownership
● Strong working knowledge of pressure vessel design codes and standards (e.g. PD 5500, ASME VIII, EN 13445, PED)
● Proficient in 3D CAD (e.g. SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent) and design calculation software
● Experience working directly with clients and third-party inspection/certification bodies
● Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
What Alpha Tanks Offers
● A high-impact role with genuine ownership of projects from concept to completion
● The opportunity to work on varied and technically challenging bespoke fabrication projects
● A collaborative team environment with a clear path for career progression
● Competitive salary, commensurate with experience
