Core responsibilities
- Diagnose faults: read alarms, interpret schematics, take measurements (pressure/temp/airflow/electrical), identify root cause.
- Service & preventative maintenance: clean coils/filters, check belts/bearings, lubrication, tighten electrical connections, verify safeties, test performance.
- Repair & replace components: compressors, fans, motors, contactors, valves, sensors, actuators, boards, filters, belts, refrigerant line parts.
- Refrigerant work: leak checking, recovery, evacuation, charging, record-keeping, environmental compliance.
- Commissioning & functional testing: verify controls sequences, set points, airflow balance checks, performance validation after repair.
- Controls/BMS interaction: basic troubleshooting of thermostats, controllers, VFDs, and sometimes Building Management Systems.
- Customer communication: explain issues, provide options/quotes, document work completed and recommendations.
- Paperwork & compliance: service reports, F-Gas logs, risk assessments, method statements, permits-to-work.
Typical equipment you’ll work on
- Split systems, VRF/VRV, packaged rooftop units
- AHUs, FCUs, ventilation/extract systems
- Chillers, heat pumps, boilers (depending on company scope)
- Refrigeration (cold rooms, display cases) in some roles
- Pumps, expansion vessels, valves, dampers, VFDs, controls
Key skills & knowledge
- Refrigeration cycle fundamentals (superheat/subcooling, pressures/temperatures)
- Electrical fault-finding (single/three-phase, relays/contactors, sensors, controls circuits)
- Mechanical aptitude (fans, bearings, alignment, airflow issues)
- Controls basics (sequencing, sensors, actuators; sometimes BACnet/Modbus awareness)
- Safe working: lockout/tagout, working at height, confined spaces (as applicable)
- Problem-solving under pressure and good customer-facing communication
Common qualifications (vary by country/employer)
- Trade/apprenticeship in refrigeration/HVAC, mechanical/electrical, or building services
- Refrigerant handling certification (e.g., F-Gas in EU/UK)
- Electrical safety / regulations knowledge
- Full driving licence often required (service van + callouts)
Working pattern
- Mix of site visits, planned maintenance, and breakdown response
- Often includes on-call rota and occasional weekend/night work
- Travel between customer sites is common
