Department Description:
The Stephen Doyle Endoscopy Department at Beaumont Hospital is a highly specialised interventional unit. It is a specialist referral centre for many hospitals within the Dublin North East Group. Nursing staff are trained to work in all areas of Endoscopy and are supported by a team of CNM’s and ANP’s.
Position Summary:
Nursing staff are required at all times to:

- Assist in the delivery of a patient centered, clinically effective and dynamic service from the patients admission to discharge.
- To be responsible for all aspects of patient care including the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of direct patient care with supervision from senior staff.
- To support the Charge Nurse/Senior Sister to monitor the safety and quality of care for patients.
- To liaise appropriately with all key members of the multi-disciplinary team and service users related to the speciality.
- To develop the required skills in Endoscopy which allows the nurse to assist clinicians safely and with confidence
- Undertake the mentor/supervisory role in support of learners
- To ensure a positive focussed service incorporating patients’ feedback to maintain and improve patient care.
- To act as an effective role model promoting excellence through practice.
- To maintain a high standard of professional and ethical responsibility.
- To ensure the compliance of mandatory training and appraisal requirements for own self

ROLE:
To provide and maintain effective, individualised nursing care by:-
Assessing (with the patients where possible) physical, psychological and social problems and the need for nursing intervention.
- Preparing and up-dating the nurse care plans
- Assisting the medical staff and Advanced Nurse Practitioners in the treatment of patients
- Acting as team leader in giving skilled nursing care and treatments for a caseload of patients.
- Planning the involvement of the patient’s relatives, teaching and supervising nursing techniques in preparation for discharge.
- Utilises assessment skills and techniques to determine patient needs on admission.
- Completes and documents the nursing admission assessment in a thorough and accurate manner.
- Assesses patient condition on an ongoing basis.
- Assesses the need for patient/family instruction.
- Develops and documents a plan of care based on patient needs.
- Updates the written plan of care based on patient needs.
- Develops patient teaching and discharge plans as necessary.
- Collaborates with other health team members in planning care.
- Provides safe, comprehensive nursing care to a caseload of patients and within the guidelines laid out by An Bord Altranais.
- Knows and practices according to established legal requirements, policy and procedures.
- Establishes care priorities based on nursing/medical patient problems.
- Performs procedures accurately, completely and safely.
- Provides care with minimal supervision in a timely manner.
- Maintains a safe environment for patients.
- Respects the dignity and confidentiality of patients, serving as an advocate as necessary.
- Functions quickly and effectively in an emergency situation.
- Adapts to changing workload.
- Deals with department incidents and accidents in accordance with hospital policy. Accurately records and report detail.
- Contributes to nursing quality assurance by assisting in the identification of recurrent nursing problems and co-operating in data collection.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Documents accurately and according to policy and procedure.
- Reports verbally and in writing pertinent patient care information to appropriate nursing/medical personnel.
- Communicates appropriately with patients/relatives and colleagues and other members of the health care team.
- Approaches interpersonal relationships in a manner that avoids antagonism, reduces conflict and prevents undue anxiety.
- Recognises self-limitations and requests assistance.
PROFESSIONAL:
Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the nursing department and hospital.
- Follows appropriate lines of authority by discussing issues firstly with Clinical Nurse Manager, then with Assistant Director of Nursing Manager and then with the Directorate Nurse Manager.
- Demonstrates flexibility by assisting in other areas of the Hospital as needed.
MANAGEMENT:
Demonstrates ability to organise care for a caseload of patients.
- Shows ability to delegate work where appropriate.
- Uses discretion for decision making regarding patient care.
- Reports on-going problems to the CNM.
EDUCATION:
Demonstrates the ability to teach and guide more Junior Staff/Students.
- Shows an interest in Post Graduate Education/Self Development.
- Attends required standard number of Study Days in the year.
