Senior Accountant (General Accounts) — Irish Practice Experience Essential
Location: Oranmore, Co. Galway (in-person)
Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: From €70,000 per year
Reports to: Partner
This Role is Specifically for a Qualified Accountant, with 3 to 5 years Experience in an Irish Accountancy Firm - in General Accountancy Role (Audit Only Candidates will not be considered)
GBS & Co is a technically advanced, growth-oriented Irish accountancy firm supporting a broad portfolio of owner-managed businesses. We’re known for being systems-driven and proactive — using strong processes, modern tools and automation to deliver consistently high-quality work for clients who value good advice and clear communication.
We’re now hiring a Senior Accountant to take ownership of a portfolio and play a meaningful role in driving standards, efficiencies and mentoring within the firm. If you’re the type of accountant who enjoys getting things right, improving how work gets done, and working in a firm that backs ambition, this is a role with genuine scope.
The Opportunity
This is a general accounts preparation role in an Irish accountancy practice — it is not an audit-only position.
You will be at the centre of practice delivery: preparing and reviewing year-end accounts, managing client deliverables, supporting compliance workflows, and helping strengthen the firm’s technical and operational standards. You’ll work closely with the Partner and senior team, and you’ll have real input into how we refine workflows, adopt tools and improve turnaround times without compromising quality.
Key Responsibilities
You will:
- Prepare and review year-end statutory financial statements for a varied Irish SME client base (companies, owner-managed businesses, and group structures where relevant).
- Deliver high-quality general accounts preparation from records through to final accounts, with strong working paper standards and clear sign-off trails.
- Support the wider delivery of practice compliance work such as VAT and payroll-related submissions, where relevant to the client portfolio and internal workflows.
- Provide practical, technically sound guidance to clients in plain English — helping them understand results, actions required, and next steps.
- Mentor and support junior colleagues, improving consistency, quality, and confidence across the team.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in systems and workflow — including process refinement and automation initiatives that make the practice faster, cleaner and more scalable.
Essential Experience (Non-Negotiable)
To be considered, you must have:
- 3 to 5 years’ experience in a General Accounts Preparation role within an Irish accountancy firm.
- Strong hands-on capability in accounts preparation (this role is not suitable for candidates whose background is primarily audit-only).
- Proven familiarity with Irish practice delivery, including day-to-day technical standards, timelines, client communications, and workpaper discipline.
- A professional accounting qualification (ACA / ACCA / CPA) or be at an advanced stage with a strong practice track record (where experience clearly supports senior delivery).
Applicants without Irish accountancy practice experience and general accounts preparation experience will not be progressed.
What You’ll Get at GBS & Co
- A well-run, technically strong practice with a modern, systems-first approach.
- A senior seat at the table: real involvement in standards, workflow and practice improvement.
- A varied client base with meaningful work — not repetitive box-ticking.
- A collaborative environment that values competence, ownership and professionalism.
- Clear scope for progression into leadership and portfolio responsibility, with a Partner who actively supports development.
