Full job descriptionRise With Us — Join Choquera as our Pastry & Deli Assistant!
Love the quiet magic of early mornings? Find real satisfaction in trays of golden pastries, neatly filled deli counters, and the smell of fresh bread coming out of the oven? If you want a role that starts at 5 AM and has you home by lunch — with your afternoons, evenings and weekends free — keep reading.
We’re hiring a Pastry & Deli Assistant to join our early-shift team at Choquera — a role for an early riser who takes genuine pride in craft, consistency, and presentation.
About Us
Choquera is a proudly family-run Andalusian bakery, bistro, and gourmet catering business in the heart of Newport, Co. Tipperary. Inspired by the rich flavours and traditions of southern Spain, we are known for our handcrafted sourdough, homemade porridge bread, artisan pastries, gourmet deli counter and warm hospitality. Every loaf, tart, and sandwich is made from scratch — with organic eggs from Ester’s farm, local honey from Ramón, and quality ingredients we trust. Our team is small, close-knit, and united by a passion for quality and genuine customer service.
What We’re Looking For
We’re on the lookout for a Pastry & Deli Assistant who thrives in the focused calm of a bakery at dawn. You’ll work alongside our head baker and chef to prepare pastries, breads, and deli-counter items for our bistro, our gourmet shop, and our growing wholesale clients.
Some prior pastry, bakery or deli experience is welcome — but we place just as much weight on attitude, reliability, and the willingness to learn. If you’re dependable at 5 AM, detail-focused, and genuinely interested in quality food, we’d love to meet you.
Your Shift
- Hours: 5:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Monday to Friday
- Occasional weekend cover (arranged in advance)
- Afternoons, evenings and most weekends are yours
Your Role
- Assist with daily pastry, scone, and viennoiserie preparation
- Support sourdough shaping, proofing, and finishing
- Prepare and present the deli counter — salads, quiches, tartlets, savoury bites
- Portion, label, and package products for our wholesale clients (daily deliveries to 1114 Café, weekly to the Urban Coop and other new business that use our services)
- Keep your workstation spotless and fully HACCP-compliant
- Support the morning team to ensure we open our doors ready to serve
What You Bring
- Genuine early-morning reliability — 5 AM starts aren’t for everyone, so please be sure the shift suits your lifestyle
- Some experience in a bakery, pastry kitchen, deli, or food-prep role
- Steady hands and a sharp eye for detail — our customers notice
- Willingness to learn new techniques, recipes, and Andalusian specialities
- A HACCP understanding (or willingness to complete training — we provide it)
- Calm, positive attitude and real team spirit
Why Work With Us?
We’re more than a workplace — we’re a family-run business that values craft, tradition, and dedication. We offer:
- Finish by 1 PM — enjoy your afternoons, evenings and weekends
- A share of tips — your hard work is recognised
- Food allowance — we take care of our team like we do our customers
- Fuel card — to help ease the commute
- Ongoing training in bakery, pastry, and Andalusian cuisine
- Genuine pride in what you produce every day — real bread, real pastry, real food
Who You Are
- An early riser who enjoys the peaceful focus of a pre-dawn kitchen
- Reliable, punctual, and consistent — the bakery runs on you
- Quietly confident, calm under pressure, and proud of your work
- Curious about artisan baking and Spanish food traditions — or ready to learn
- A team player who cares about getting the detail right
