Inlet Independence is a very small company formed with the purpose of providing care and personal assistance for me; a 58-year-old retired GP with Progressive Multiple Sclerosis living at home.
I am currently looking to complete my team of 3 personal assistants with experience of providing one-to-one personal care and assistance to people with physical disabilities in order to aid me with all personal-care, work-related, domestic and social aspects of my daily life.
I live at home with my partner, two labradors, write fiction and am a full-time powered-wheelchair-user.
I need personal assistance to enable me to live my life independently in the way I choose. Personal assistants will assist me to do this by listening carefully to what I need/want and helping me - with the aid of my direction whenever it might be needed. It is therefore vital that those assisting me understand how to be empathetic and to have also developed excellent communication skills of which listening is key. Privacy and confidentiality will be vital. I try to live my life respecting others regardless of their born-gender, gender preference, race, religion, age, ethnic background, sexuality, and/or any disability. Any personal assistant would also need to share and try to operate with these values.
The job will involve assisting me with a variety of tasks at home, and in any interaction I might have within the community. Like most people, my day is likely to have some sort of routine, but this can also vary so it is difficult for me to list every task I might need assistance with each day. As my needs change so will the level of assistance I need.
After a period of familiarisation with my personal and physical care needs, each employee will be required to assist me, (sometimes without close direction) to carry out my part in creating a comfortable home environment. My personal assistants will therefore need to be able to use their own initiative and also when requested, to take direction. Open communication will be vital.
A willingness to understand and work within the philosophy of Independent Living will be necessary.
Manual handling training will be compulsory - on the job training will be provided. You will not need to be strong to do the job well, but a level of general good health will be important.
The job will involve provision of the following:
Assistance with daily hygiene ie. Cleaning, drying and applying creams to my skin
Assistance with dressing and undressing
Assistance with transferring me from and to the bed and into and out of my wheelchair using a Sara Flex Sit-to-Stand hoist.
Assistance with washing and drying my hair
Assistance placing things where I can access them
Assistance with food preparation and cooking
Assistance with household duties
Assistance with daily stretching/physiotherapy and exercising
Assistance when attending meetings, both online and in-person
Occasional assistance with my work: light office work (photocopying, scanning, printing, tidying and setting up my workstation)
Occasional assistance with attending social events (both daytime and evening)
Occasional overnights
Any other tasks as required with agreement
Access to your own transport will be necessary as you will need to arrive at and leave work early in the morning and late into the evening. I live quite rurally.
You will be expected to cover my care during the other personal assistants' planned leave hours... and also sometimes on rare occasion if emergencies arise.
We offer a one-month trial for both the personal assistant (and me as their employer/client), with an initial six-month probationary period.
A flexible hours contract of employment will be offered with Inlet Independence Company Limited by Guarantee
Confidential Garda vetting via HSE will be needed.
