Part-Time Illustrator / Character Artist

Paige Press Ireland is looking for a talented human illustrator to create original character artwork inspired by our romance novels.
We're looking for an artist who loves bringing fictional characters to life and can create polished, attractive, emotionally expressive artwork for our readers. The artwork will primarily be used across social media, newsletters, our website and other promotional channels.
This is a human-created art position. We do not use AI-generated artwork for this role. All submitted portfolio pieces and all artwork created for Paige Press must be drawn/illustrated by the artist and not generated, in whole or in part, using generative AI tools.
The Art Style We're Looking For
Style is extremely important for this position.
We're specifically looking for clean, polished, contemporary digital character illustration featuring attractive adult characters with realistic or semi-realistic proportions.
Think modern romance character art / Bookstagram / BookTok illustration rather than traditional portraiture or digital painting.
Our ideal artwork features:
- Clean, defined lines and shapes
- Attractive adult characters with realistic or semi-realistic proportions
- Beautiful, distinctive faces with expressive features
- Natural anatomy and posing
- Romantic chemistry and emotion between characters
- Clean digital shading, highlights and detail
- A polished, modern, commercial illustration feel
- Characters who are recognizable and distinctive while retaining the heightened attractiveness associated with romance character art
We are NOT looking for:
- Painterly or digitally painted styles
- Traditional portrait/painting styles
- Photorealism
- Cartoon or children's illustration
- Chibi
- Anime or manga
- Caricature
- Highly stylized comic-book art
The finished work should clearly feel like illustration rather than a painting or photograph.

What You'll Do
- Create approximately two finished character illustrations per month, featuring characters and couples from Paige Press novels
- Create occasional sketches, character studies and smaller pieces of artwork
- Adapt finished artwork into different sizes and formats for social media and other digital uses
- Work from character descriptions, book excerpts, mood boards and visual references
- Make reasonable revisions based on feedback
- Occasionally create artwork for book launches, promotions, events or merchandise concepts
- Help us build a growing library of original Paige Press character artwork
Projects will vary depending on what we're promoting. One month might include two individual character portraits, while another could include a romantic couple, a scene from a novel or a collection of smaller sketches.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who:
- Has a strong portfolio of original, human-created digital character illustration in the style described above
- Enjoys drawing attractive adult characters, couples and romantic or emotionally expressive scenes
- Is comfortable with the themes and content found in adult romance novels
- Can capture personality, chemistry and emotion—not just physical appearance
- Has strong skills in anatomy, faces, hair, clothing, posing and digital rendering
- Can work independently from a creative brief while also taking direction and incorporating feedback
- Is reliable and comfortable managing a small, ongoing monthly workload
- Can provide high-resolution finished files
- Does not use generative AI to create or substantially modify commissioned artwork
Experience working with authors, publishers, fandoms or the online book community is welcome, but not required.
Formal art qualifications aren't necessary. We're primarily interested in the quality of your portfolio and whether your existing artistic style matches the aesthetic we're looking for.
Hours & Pay
This is an ongoing part-time employee position for approximately 7 hours per week, paid at €20 per hour (approximately €600 per month).
The schedule is flexible, and most work can be completed independently around other commitments.
