Our Power Division delivers complex transmission and distribution projects, supporting key clients across the energy sector, including high-voltage cable infrastructure, substations and associated civils works.
Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Design Manager to join our Power Division and support the delivery of major HV cable and power infrastructure projects.
The Role.
The Design Manager will lead and coordinate the design function across power projects from feasibility through to commissioning and handover. The successful candidate will manage internal and external design resources, oversee technical outputs, and ensure design solutions are practical, compliant, and aligned with programme and construction requirements.
This role requires a strong civil engineering background with experience in HV cable trenching and power infrastructure projects, combined with proven design management and stakeholder coordination capability.
Key Duties and Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the design process across HV cable and associated infrastructure projects from concept through to construction and handover.
Scope and specify surveys, site investigations, design reports and technical studies required to support project delivery.
Manage internal and external design resources, ensuring deliverables are produced to programme, budget and quality requirements.
Review and coordinate design documentation, drawings and technical submissions prior to client approval.
Undertake route optioneering, design reviews and constructability assessments to support efficient and safe project delivery.
Ensure programme milestones and design deliverables are achieved in line with project schedules.
Coordinate design interfaces between GMC, clients, consultants and third parties throughout the project lifecycle.
Manage design approvals and document review processes with the client.
Support and manage design changes arising during construction, ensuring appropriate technical and commercial controls are maintained.
Liaise closely with construction teams to ensure designs are buildable and aligned with site requirements.
Contribute to commissioning activities, testing support and project handover documentation.
Promote compliance with relevant safety, quality and technical standards throughout the design process.
The Candidate: Required Experience and Competencies:
Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline.
Significant experience in a Design Manager, Senior Design Engineer or similar role within utilities, energy or infrastructure.
Demonstrable experience on HV cable trenching projects is essential.
Experience working in and around substation environments.
Strong understanding of cable design principles, including pulling calculations, cable ratings and associated technical considerations.
Experience carrying out route optioneering and constructability reviews.
Knowledge of trenchless duct installation methodologies would be advantageous.
Proficiency in CAD and review of engineering drawings and technical documentation.
Strong programme management, stakeholder engagement and coordination skills.
Experience managing design changes through construction delivery is highly desirable.
