Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Summary
A Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing blood from patients for medical testing, transfusions, research, or blood donation. They ensure patient comfort, maintain accurate records, and follow strict health and safety procedures when handling specimens.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all ages
- Verify patient identity and ensure correct labelling of specimens
- Prepare patients by explaining procedures and ensuring comfort
- Follow infection control and safety protocols at all times
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of phlebotomy equipment and work areas
- Process blood samples for transport to the laboratory
- Accurately record patient information and collection details
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions during and after blood collection
- Maintain stock levels of supplies and report any shortages
- Comply with all healthcare regulations, policies, and confidentiality standards

Qualifications and Requirements
- Relevant phlebotomy certification or healthcare qualification
- Previous experience in a clinical or laboratory setting (preferred)
- Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures
- Training in infection prevention and control
- Basic IT skills for record keeping
- Current CPR/First Aid certification (desirable)
Working Conditions
- Work in hospitals, clinics, GP practices, or laboratories
- May involve early mornings, evenings, or weekend shifts
- Regular interaction with patients, including those who may be anxious or unwell
- Requires standing for long periods and handling of biological samples
