We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Embryologist to join our laboratory team in Cork. The Role
The successful candidate will perform a full range of embryology procedures within a modern, quality-focused laboratory environment while supporting the Laboratory Manager in the day-to-day operation and strategic development of the service.
The post holder will contribute to maintaining the highest standards of clinical care, laboratory performance, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and staff development.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Laboratory Practice
- Perform all routine embryology and andrology procedures, including:
- Semen preparation and analysis
- Oocyte identification and handling
- Conventional IVF and ICSI
- Fertilisation assessment
- Embryo culture and grading
- Blastocyst assessment
- Embryo transfer support
- Cryopreservation and warming of gametes and embryos
- Embryo Biopsy
- Make patient-specific recommendations based on laboratory findings and treatment outcomes.
- Assess embryo suitability for transfer, cryopreservation, or disposal in accordance with clinical protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of all laboratory records and documentation.
- Maintain the highest standards of witnessing, traceability, and patient identification.
Leadership & Team Development
- Develop positive and effective working relationships across all departments.
- Assist the Laboratory Manager in the operational management and strategic development of the laboratory.
- Support, mentor, and train junior embryologists and laboratory staff.
Quality & Compliance
- Actively participate in the SIMS IVF Quality Management System.
- Support audits, corrective and preventative actions, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, and professional guidelines.
- Participate in maintaining laboratory KPIs and quality standards.
- Promote a culture of patient safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Service Development
- Contribute to the development and implementation of laboratory protocols and procedures.
- Support research, innovation, and service improvement projects.
- Keep abreast of emerging scientific developments and best practices in assisted reproduction.
- Participate in professional organisations, conferences, journal reviews, and continuing education activities.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain an up-to-date personal training and competency record.
- Report concerns, incidents, or operational issues promptly to management.
- Uphold the highest standards of confidentiality and professionalism.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role and experience level.
Essential Requirements
- Degree in Life Sciences or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in a clinical IVF laboratory.
- Demonstrated competency in all core embryology procedures.
- Extensive hands-on experience with ICSI and embryo biopsy.
- Strong understanding of quality management systems and laboratory governance.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient-centred care.
Desirable Requirements
- Master's degree in Reproductive Science, Clinical Embryology, or related discipline.
- Previous supervisory or staff management experience.
- Experience with electronic patient management systems and document control systems.
- Participation in research, publications, or presentations within reproductive medicine.
