Part-Time School Caretaker / Maintenance Person
Location: Stepaside, Dublin 18
Job Type: Part-time
Hours: 15 hours per week
Pay: €18.00 per hour
Schedule: Semi-flexible, to be agreed with school management
About the Role
Stepaside Educate Together National School is seeking an experienced, practical and reliable Part-Time School Caretaker / Maintenance Person to support the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of our school building and grounds.
This is a paid position for 15 hours per week at €18.00 per hour. There will be some flexibility in how the 15 hours are arranged across the working week, subject to the needs of the school and agreement with school management. Some maintenance work may be most appropriately carried out outside of pupil contact times.
We are particularly looking for someone who is hands-on, practical and experienced in general building maintenance, who can work independently, identify jobs that need attention and take pride in keeping the school building safe, functional and well maintained.
The role would suit someone with previous experience in property maintenance, facilities management, construction, painting and decorating, general trades or a similar hands-on position.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate's duties will include, but are not limited to:
- General maintenance and minor repairs throughout the school building
- Painting and decorating classrooms, corridors, offices and other areas as required
- Repairing and replacing door handles, hinges, locks, door closers and other fittings
- Carrying out minor repairs to doors, cupboards, shelving, furniture and fixtures
- Basic carpentry and general repair work
- Assembling, repairing and maintaining school furniture and equipment
- Installing shelves, noticeboards, signage and other wall-mounted items
- Identifying maintenance issues and carrying out appropriate minor repairs
- Liaising with and facilitating access for external contractors where specialist work is required
- Assisting with the movement of furniture, equipment, deliveries and supplies when required
- Supporting the general upkeep of school grounds and external areas
- Assisting with the preparation of rooms or areas for school events and activities where required
- Keeping tools, equipment, maintenance materials and work areas organised and safe
- Monitoring maintenance supplies and informing school management when materials or equipment need to be purchased
- Undertaking other reasonable maintenance and caretaking duties associated with the effective running and upkeep of the school
The successful candidate will not be expected to undertake specialist electrical, plumbing or other regulated works unless appropriately qualified and authorised to do so.
Experience and Skills
Applicants should:
- Have previous relevant experience in building maintenance, property maintenance, facilities, construction, painting and decorating or a similar practical role
- Be competent and confident carrying out a range of general repairs and maintenance tasks
- Be able to work independently and use their own initiative
- Be reliable, punctual and organised
- Have a good awareness of health and safety
- Understand their own areas of competence and recognise when work requires a qualified or specialist contractor
- Be comfortable working within a busy school environment
- Have good communication and interpersonal skills
- Be willing to work collaboratively with school management and staff
Previous experience working in a school, community facility or similar environment would be an advantage but is not essential.
Hours and Flexibility
The position is for 15 hours per week.
The working pattern will be semi-flexible and agreed between the successful candidate and school management. While the needs of the school will determine when some work must be undertaken, there will be flexibility in arranging the weekly hours.
This may particularly suit an experienced maintenance person or tradesperson seeking regular part-time work alongside other commitments.
Garda Vetting and Appointment
As this position is based within a primary school, appointment will be subject to satisfactory Garda Vetting, reference checks and any other relevant pre-employment requirements.
The successful candidate will be employed by the school's Board of Management.
How to Apply
Applicants should submit a CV outlining their relevant experience, together with the contact details of referees.
We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates who enjoy practical work, can identify and resolve everyday maintenance issues independently and take pride in maintaining a safe, welcoming and well-presented school environment.
