Job Purpose
The General Operative plays a key role in ensuring the efficient movement, sorting, handling and dispatch of parcels throughout the GLS network. The successful candidate will work as part of a team to ensure operational targets are achieved while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
● Parcel Handling & Processing
· Load and unload delivery vehicles, trailers and containers safely and efficiently.
· Sort parcels accurately using handheld scanning equipment and automated systems.
· Move parcels to designated locations within the depot.
· Assist in the preparation of outbound shipments and route allocation.
· Ensure all parcels are handled with care to minimise damage.
● Warehouse Operations
· Pick, pack and prepare items for dispatch where required.
· Maintain accurate records through scanning and warehouse management systems.
· Assist with stock control and inventory checks.
· Support operational activities during peak periods.
● Health, Safety & Compliance
· Adhere to all company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
· Follow manual handling guidelines and safe working practices.
· Report hazards, incidents, damaged goods or operational issues promptly.
· Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
● Teamwork & Performance
· Work collaboratively with colleagues across all operational areas.
· Meet productivity, accuracy and quality targets.
· Demonstrate flexibility to work across different operational functions as required.
· Participate in training and continuous improvement initiatives.
Person Specification
– Essential Requirements
· Good level of spoken and written English.
· Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
· Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

· Commitment to health and safety standards.
● Desirable Requirements
· Previous warehouse, logistics or parcel handling experience.
· Experience using handheld scanners or warehouse management systems.
· Manual Handling certification.
· Forklift licence or MHE experience.

· Shift-based operation including early mornings, evenings, nights and weekends.
· Frequent manual handling and lifting.
