About Encon
Encon, a leading Building, Retrofit & Renewables Contractor in the South East of Ireland, is continuing its expansion and now seeks a talented Commercial Energy Engineer to join our dynamic team. With a strong focus on energy retrofitting, sustainability, new build developments, and commercial façade projects, Encon offers long-term job security.
If you want to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of energy-efficient construction while enjoying strong work–life balance and career growth, this opportunity is for you.
The Role
As Commercial Energy Engineer, you will take our commercial and community energy projects from first client engagement right through to handover for delivery.
You will play an active part in winning work — supported by the technical expertise of our Managing Director and the assistance of our office and sales support team — and then take full ownership of each project: carrying out the energy audit and assessment, developing the upgrade design, managing grant funding applications, handling procurement and contracts, and acting as the client's main point of contact, right through to a clean handover to our delivery Project Manager.
Where it makes sense to sub-contract a specialist energy audit, you will source and manage that input; otherwise, every stage sits with you. This is a hands-on, end-to-end role for someone who enjoys both the commercial side of converting a client and the technical satisfaction of seeing a project through to completion.
Our projects span a range of sectors — including community groups, businesses, hospitality, education, and transport and logistics — so you will work across a varied mix of building types and client needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the sales process — preparing and presenting proposals, advising on technical solutions, and helping convert opportunities — working alongside the Managing Director and our office and sales support team.
- Take full ownership of each project once won, managing it through to handover for delivery.
- Conduct energy audits and on-site assessments — or, where appropriate, source and manage a sub-contracted specialist — to establish each building's performance and upgrade potential.
Essential Requirements
- The ability to carry out commercial energy assessments — through Non-Domestic (Commercial) BER Assessor registration with SEAI and/or proven experience delivering SSEA energy audits.
- Demonstrable experience across the project lifecycle — including design, procurement and contract management — on construction, retrofit or energy projects.
- Strong understanding of energy efficiency measures, building fabric and renewable technologies (solar PV, heat pumps, insulation, ventilation and similar).
- Full, clean driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts in plain language.
- Confident using energy assessment software and standard office tools.
- Carry out Commercial (Non-Domestic) BER assessments and/or SSEA energy audits, and use the findings to inform the upgrade strategy.
- Develop clear, practical energy upgrade designs and specifications.
- Prepare and manage grant funding applications on behalf of clients, including SEAI grant schemes and Above the Shop funding supports.
- Manage procurement by way of liaising with our measurement & estimating department for sourcing, tendering, evaluating and selecting suppliers and sub-contractors, and securing materials and equipment.
- Manage contracts and project documentation, keeping cost, scope and programme under control.
- Act as the client's main point of contact from first engagement through the design, funding and procurement phases.
- Co-ordinate a clean, well-documented handover to the delivery Project Manager.
- Stay current on funding schemes, grant rates, eligibility criteria and relevant regulatory changes.
Desirable — A Strong Advantage
- Experience preparing or managing SEAI grant applications and/or Above the Shop funding applications.
Personal Attributes
- Takes ownership — comfortable being accountable for a project from first engagement through to handover.
- Confident with clients — able to build trust and help win work in a consultative setting, with support from the wider team.
- Highly organised — able to manage scope, cost, programme and funding deadlines without losing accuracy.
- Detail-oriented and precise — essential for assessments, designs, contracts and grant applications.
- Commercially aware — with sound judgement around proposals, procurement, suppliers and contracts.
- Analytically capable — comfortable interpreting energy data and translating it into clear recommendations.
- A confident communicator — able to present, explain and keep clients informed and reassured throughout.
- Collaborative — works well with the Managing Director, sales support team, delivery Project Manager and sub-contractors.
- Experience in technical or consultative sales within construction, energy or a related field.
- A relevant qualification — for example in renewable energy, building services engineering, energy management, construction, environmental science or sustainability.
- Knowledge of NZEB standards, Part F, L & V of the Building Regulations and retrofit best practice.
- LEED accreditation (e.g. LEED Green Associate or AP), or experience delivering projects to LEED standards — an advantage, not essential.
- Project management experience or qualification.
- Procurement or contract management training.
- Valid Safe Pass card.
- Self-motivated — able to work independently across multiple concurrent projects.
