Operations Dublin-International-Ireland
Baillie Gifford Investment Management Europe Limited (“BGE”) is an Irish-authorised UCITS Management Company and Alternative Investment Fund Manager based in Dublin, and part of the wider Baillie Gifford Group (“Group”).
Reporting to BGE's Risk and Compliance Officer ("RCO"), you will work with colleagues in BGE and the wider Group Business Risk team. This is a broad, hands-on role combining oversight of BGE's fund risk managerial function with analytical, reporting and improvement work across Group Business Risk.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day monitoring and oversight of BGE’s fund-risk management arrangements. You will ensure that relevant risks are identified, measured, monitored, challenged, escalated and reported through an effective framework of governance, policies, risk profiles, limits and controls.
Supported by the RCO and colleagues across Group Business Risk, you will form an independent view of the risks within BGE's funds, critically assess information received from delegates and service providers, and provide clear reporting to the BGE Board and relevant Fund Boards.
Alongside these regulated responsibilities, you will contribute to broader Group Business Risk work. The role includes hands-on analysis and defined projects, providing scope to build wider risk experience while retaining clear accountability for BGE's fund risk responsibilities.
The successful candidate will be proposed as BGE’s Designated Person with responsibility for Fund Risk Management (“PCF-39C”), subject to the prior approval of the Central Bank of Ireland. Previous PCF approval is not essential, and the role may suit an experienced fund-risk professional who is ready to take on their first PCF appointment.
Appointment to this role is subject to the Central Bank of Ireland’s Fitness and Probity approval process and the candidate meeting BGE’s internal due diligence requirements.
-
Monitor and oversee whether BGE's funds are managed in accordance with the fund risk management framework, approved risk appetite, offering documents, internal limits, applicable regulatory limits and relevant Central Bank requirements and guidance.
-
Develop and maintain Fund Risk Profiles for each fund, including appropriate risk metrics and tolerances, for review and approval by the relevant Fund Boards and the BGE Board before launch and as material changes arise.
-
Monitor and assess the risk profile of the funds against approved risk appetite and the applicable Risk Management Processes ("RMPs").
-
Review fund risk information received from internal investment managers, delegates and service providers; investigate material movements and exceptions; and document appropriate challenge and follow-up.
-
Ensure that appropriate risk controls, checks and stress testing are completed in line with applicable requirements, undertaking analysis directly where appropriate and critically assessing the results.
-
Prepare clear, regular and ad hoc fund risk reporting for the BGE Board and relevant Fund Boards, and attend or present at meetings as required.
-
Oversee the investigation, documentation, escalation and remediation of breaches, incidents and emerging fund risk issues, including consideration of root cause and actions to prevent recurrence.
-
Assess the fund risk implications of new fund launches and material product changes, and complete or oversee the relevant onboarding risk work.
-
Maintain the policies and procedures allocated to the fund risk managerial function, ensuring that they remain fit for purpose, are reviewed regularly and are approved at the appropriate level.
-
Monitor relevant regulatory and industry developments and recommend proportionate changes to BGE's fund risk arrangements.
-
Build constructive working relationships with the RCO, other Designated Persons, Group colleagues, delegates, depositaries, administrators and other service providers, while retaining independence of judgement.
-
Contribute to Group Business Risk analysis, reporting, thematic reviews, projects and risk initiatives.
-
Help improve risk data, management information, controls and processes, including the effective use of technology.
-
Lead or support defined workstreams where appropriate, working across teams and sharing fund risk knowledge with colleagues.
-
Contribute to broader risk work where your skills can add value, while ensuring that BGE's regulated responsibilities receive the time and attention they require.
What success looks like:
-
Trusted fund risk oversight: BGE has a clear, independent and well-evidenced view of the risks within its funds, supported by effective risk arrangements, profiles, limits and controls that meet regulatory requirements.
-
Board confidence: The BGE Board and relevant Fund Boards receive clear, timely and insightful risk reporting that supports effective oversight and decision making.
-
Constructive independent challenge: Delegates, investment managers and service providers are challenged effectively, with material issues identified, escalated and followed through while maintaining strong working relationships.
-
Continuous improvement: Risk data, management information, controls and processes continually improve, strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of oversight.
-
Broader contribution: Fund risk expertise contributes to Group Business Risk priorities while BGE's regulated responsibilities remain appropriately prioritised.
Your knowledge and experience:
-
Relevant experience in fund risk, investment risk or investment oversight, preferably gained within an asset manager, UCITS Management Company, AIFM or comparable regulated environment.
-
Sound working knowledge of the Irish and EU regulatory framework for investment funds, including the UCITS Directive, AIFMD and relevant Central Bank requirements.
-
Practical experience analysing fund portfolios and risk measures, including investment, market and liquidity risk, and assessing risk limits, stress testing, exceptions or breaches.
-
Experience reviewing information received from delegates or service providers and forming an independent, evidence-based view.
-
The judgement and confidence to challenge constructively, identify when an issue requires escalation and explain the basis for your view.
-
The ability to prepare clear written analysis and reporting for senior committees or Boards, or strong evidence of readiness to do so.
-
Good systems knowledge and data analysis skills, with the ability to work accurately with detailed information.
-
Clear communication, sound organisation and the ability to manage competing priorities collaboratively.
-
Previous experience supporting a Designated Person, PCF holder or another senior regulated role.
-
Experience of the Irish funds industry, Central Bank engagement or presenting to Boards or senior governance committees.
-
Experience with risk systems, data visualisation or analytical tools such as Power BI
-
A relevant professional qualification, such as CFA, FRM or an equivalent qualification.
