N17 Superstores is a second-generation family-run SME retailer, successfully operating three electrical and furniture retail stores in Galway and Mayo as well as an online platform.
Our flagship store and main distribution warehouse is based in Milltown, Co. Galway, with a further two stores in Galway City and Ballina, Co. Mayo.
With ambitious growth plans over the next 3–5 years, we're looking for an experienced Financial Controller to join our team in a part-time capacity and help shape the next stage of our journey.
The Opportunity
We are building a standalone Financial Controller function to be part of the Senior Management Team, reporting directly to the Owner Directors.
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Accountant to take ownership of the day-to-day finance function within our expanding business. This is a hands-on role suited to a finance professional who enjoys working across all aspects of accounting, from payroll and bookkeeping to management accounts, budgeting, and financial reporting.
Working closely with the Owner Directors, you will be part of Senior Management and play a key role in providing accurate financial information, maintaining strong financial controls, and supporting business decision-making. The successful candidate will be highly organised, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple finance responsibilities in a retail environment.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Line-manage the Accounts Administrator and oversee day‑to‑day finance activities including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Cashflow, and Cost Management.
- Prepare accurate monthly and quarterly management accounts for the Directors.
- Prepare monthly financial performance reports analysing sales, gross margins, operating costs and profitability.
- Lead annual budgets and rolling forecasts, supporting operational and commercial teams.
- Monitor business performance against budgets and identify areas for improvement.
- Provide commercial financial advice to the owner directors to support strategic decision-making.
Financial Control
- Oversee & strengthen internal controls for VAT preparation, compliance, reconciliations and Year-end financials.
- Establish and maintain strong financial controls, internal procedures, and compliance processes appropriate to a growing business.
- Ensure accurate P&L reporting, with balance sheet reconciliations and month-end processes delivering real-time data.
- Monitor working capital, stock, debtors and creditors.
- Ensure appropriate controls over cash handling and retail transactions via current EPOS system.
Cash Flow & Banking
- Manage cash flow forecasting and liquidity.
- Monitor banking relationships and financing arrangements.
- Identify methods to ensure efficient foreign exchange for imports.
- Manage weekly creditor payment schedules.
- Manage customer debt collection where applicable.
Compliance & Tax
- Ensure compliance with Irish accounting standards and company legislation.
- Oversee VAT, PAYE/PRSI and Revenue compliance.
- Liaise with external accountants, auditors, banks and professional advisers.
- Year-end accounts preparation.
Payroll
- Oversee Payroll function and ensure compliance.
- Manage employee expense claims and ensure records are maintained accurately.
- Manage commission payouts to sales employees.
- Review & manage data provided to company pension provider.
Process Improvement
- Enhance systems, reporting tools, and workflows to support efficiency and growth within the Finance Department.
Your Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Professional accounting qualification (ACCA/CIMA/ACA) with strong technical and commercial experience.
- 5–10 years' post-qualification experience, including at least 2 years as a Financial Controller or equivalent.
- Strong management accounting and financial reporting skills.
- Excellent knowledge of Irish VAT and payroll compliance.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience with accounting software such as Sage, Bright books, Xero, Big Red Cloud or similar ERP systems.
- Strong analytical and commercial mindset with strategic skills to improve the business from a financial perspective.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Confident working in a growing SME with hands‑on involvement and continuous improvement mindset.
- Comfortable implementing structure, systems, and controls in a scaling environment.
- Ability to work independently and proactively within a small team environment.
- Ability to manage and develop direct report, with a supportive, hands-on leadership style suited to a small team.
Desirable
- Experience in a multi-site retail environment, wholesale or consumer-facing businesses.
- Experience implementing finance systems or process improvements.
- Experience supporting business growth and expansion.
