Role Purpose:
The Histopathology Registrar is responsible for the accurate macroscopic examination, description, dissection, and sampling of surgical pathology specimens according to established protocols and under consultant supervision where appropriate. The role supports timely and accurate histopathological diagnosis while ensuring compliance with laboratory quality standards, patient safety, and accreditation requirements.
The successful candidate will have:

Skills / Experience:

Medical degree (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent).
- Registration with the relevant medical regulatory authority.
- Enrolment in or completion of a recognized Histopathology Residency/Registrar Training Programme.
- Membership or progress toward specialist pathology qualifications (e.g., Royal College of Pathologists examinations or equivalent).
- Experience in surgical pathology.
Key Responsibilities:

Perform gross examination ("cut up") of a range of surgical specimens appropriate to the registrar's level of training (including but not limited to breast, gynae, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, lung and skin).

Describe macroscopic findings accurately and comprehensively.
- Select and submit representative tissue blocks according to departmental protocols and current guidelines.
- Orient, ink, measure, and dissect specimens as required.
- Ensure correct specimen labelling, cassette identification, and documentation.
- Correlate clinical information with macroscopic findings where appropriate.
- Escalate complex, unusual, or high-risk specimens to the supervising consultant.
- If applicable participate in frozen section services when appropriately trained and supervised.
- Maintain specimen integrity, biosafety, and infection control standards.
- Contribute to quality assurance, audit, and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, teaching, and educational activities.
- Maintain accurate records using the laboratory information system.
