Job Purpose
The Gym and Swimming Instructor will deliver safe, engaging fitness and swimming sessions while providing professional front-desk support. The postholder will help customers achieve their fitness and swimming goals, maintain high safety standards, and ensure a welcoming experience throughout the leisure facility.
Key Responsibilities
Gym Instruction
Conduct customer inductions and explain the safe and effective use of gym equipment.
- Develop appropriate exercise programmes based on customers' goals, abilities and fitness levels.
- Demonstrate exercises and correct unsafe or ineffective technique.
- Supervise the gym floor and respond promptly to customer questions or safety concerns.
- Motivate customers and monitor their progress.
- Deliver fitness classes where qualified and required.
- Inspect equipment, report faults and maintain a clean, organised gym environment.
Swimming Instruction
· Plan and deliver swimming lessons for children and adults of different ages and abilities.
- Teach swimming strokes, water confidence and essential water-safety skills.
- Assess swimmers' progress and adapt lessons to meet individual needs.
- Demonstrate correct techniques and provide clear, constructive feedback.
- Maintain active supervision and enforce pool safety rules.
- Complete attendance, assessment, progress and incident records.
- Communicate professionally with parents, guardians and adult learners.
- Check teaching aids and report damaged or unsafe equipment.
Reception and Customer Service
· Welcome customers and provide accurate information about memberships, classes, lessons and facility services.
- Handle bookings, registrations, payments, cancellations and customer enquiries.
- Answer telephone calls and respond to email or in-person enquiries professionally.
- Operate reception, membership and point-of-sale systems accurately.
- Process cash and card transactions and complete end-of-shift reconciliation where required.
- Resolve routine complaints calmly and refer serious or unresolved matters to management.
- Maintain accurate customer records while protecting personal and payment information.
- Support membership sales, programme promotion and customer-retention activities.
Safety and Operations
· Follow all health and safety, safeguarding, emergency and operating procedures.
- Respond appropriately to accidents, incidents and emergencies within the limits of training.
- Carry out routine checks of gym, pool and reception areas.
- Complete accident, incident, maintenance and cleaning records accurately.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout the facility.
- Attend staff meetings, training sessions and professional-development activities.
- Work collaboratively with lifeguards, instructors, cleaners, managers and other facility staff.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
· Recognised gym or fitness instructor qualification appropriate to the country of employment.
- Recognised swimming instructor qualification or ability to complete the required training.
- Current lifeguard certification.
- Strong swimming ability and knowledge of major swimming strokes.
- Experience working with customers, gym members, swimmers or members of the public.
- Ability to use computers, booking systems, email and point-of-sale equipment.
- Knowledge of health and safety, safeguarding and customer confidentiality.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
· Lifeguard or pool-rescue qualification.
- Experience teaching children and adults at different ability levels.
- Experience developing individual fitness programmes.
- Previous reception, sales or leisure-centre experience.
- Experience handling cash and card payments.
- Qualification or experience in group exercise, personal training or aquatic fitness.
- Training in disability awareness, inclusive instruction or conflict resolution.
