Epic Cogito Database Administrator
Description:
The Cogito Database Administrator (DBA) is a critical, hands-on role. This person installs and administers the Epic MS SQL database and administers Caboodle, Epic's enterprise data warehouse. This role also performs environment setup and configuration, proactive monitoring, backup/restores, and daily maintenance. It also performs ETL operations and is vigilant that the ETL process runs successfully nightly.

Design, develop, and maintain databases to ensure reliability and scalability.
Document technical specifications and follow industry best practices.
Install and maintain software, monitoring system resources (CPU, memory, disk).
Perform ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) operations in compliance with SLAs; monitor job execution, troubleshoot failures, and apply fixes as needed.
Handle specialized data processes with accuracy and security.
Implement and document backup and recovery procedures, including failover strategies.
Maintain database security, ensuring systems are patched and compliant with security standards.
Execute disaster recovery (DR) cutovers for critical systems to maintain business continuity.
Manage authentication protocols to safeguard access.
Plan system capacity, forecasting growth and ensuring redundancy for storage and CPU resources.
Monitor performance, review logs and conduct health checks regularly.
Optimize database performance, applying indexing and assisting developers in query tuning.
Troubleshoot issues, including locked resources and user-related problems.
Apply server patches and optimizations to maintain data integrity and security.
Manage data warehouses, ensuring efficient storage and retrieval.
Ensure compliance with data protection laws and organizational policies.
Design and manage SSIS packages for automated data workflows.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess and fulfill SQL Server requirements.
Database Management: Administer and maintain Epic databases (Clarity, Caboodle, Chronicles).
Performance Optimization: Monitor and tune database performance; manage capacity planning.
ETL Process Management: Schedule and troubleshoot Clarity extracts and Caboodle ETL jobs.
Backup & Recovery: Perform regular backups, verify restores, and test disaster recovery plans.
Security & Compliance: Manage roles, permissions, and enforce HIPAA/security standards.
Upgrades & Patching: Apply Epic-released updates and RDBMS upgrades in production and non-production environments.
Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Use Epic and third-party tools to monitor database health and resolve issues.
Collaboration: Work with application analysts, report writers, and infrastructure teams for system changes and enhancements.
Documentation: Maintain operational runbooks, recovery procedures, and configuration guides.
Provide 24x7 on-call support, ensuring rapid resolution of critical system issues.
Document processes and technical specifications and deliver knowledge transfer to team members.
Track and resolve issues using a ticketing system.
Demonstrate strong understanding of both technical and business requirements in healthcare environments.
Skill Requirements
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or related field.
3–5 years of DBA experience, with at least 2 years supporting Epic systems as a Database Administrator.
Database Administration experience is required.
Basic familiarity with EHR systems including workflows and business processes
Multiyear programming experience in classroom or business setting in programming languages such as TCL, JavaScript, Java, or Python.
On-Call Support: Participate in after-hours support and change control processes and on-call support as part of an on-call rotation
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication abilities.
Willingness to work in US business hours
Willing and able to support multiple healthcare systems across three different time zones in the US.
Dedicated, self-motivated, flexible, and self-directed with a strong work ethic.
Must-Have (Non-Negotiable) Skills:
Epic Cogito/Clarity Certification – Required for administering Epic’s analytics environment and ETL processes.
Strong SQL Server Expertise – Proficiency in MS SQL Server, including performance tuning and query optimization.
ETL Process Management – Hands-on experience with Clarity Console and Caboodle ETL workflows, troubleshooting failures, and ensuring data integrity.
Familiarity with programming languages API or scripting languages – Java, C++, .Net, Python, JavaScript, etc.
Good to Have (Optional) Skills:
Data Visualization Tools – Familiarity with Qlik, Power BI, or Tableau for reporting and analytics.
Automation & Scripting – Ability to automate tasks using shell scripts or configuration management tools.
Cloud Integration – Experience integrating Epic environments with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) for backup or analytics workloads
Familiarity in developing and maintaining SSIS packages.
Important (Strongly Preferred) Skills:
Epic Caboodle & SlicerDicer Administration – Ability to configure Caboodle data models and manage SlicerDicer security.
System Administration Background – Experience with Linux servers, VMware environments, and storage systems supporting Epic infrastructure.
Performance Monitoring & Capacity Planning – Skilled in using Epic and third-party tools for proactive database health checks and resource planning.
Build SSIS Packages
Good to Have (Optional) Skills:
Data Visualization Tools – Familiarity with Qlik, Power BI, or Tableau for reporting and analytics.
