The Deputy Technical Manager will be a valued member of the team, directly contributing to the quality, ambition and success of this work. The role offers variety, responsibility and the chance to help deliver memorable experiences for artists and audiences across a busy and growing organisation.
The Opportunity
Working closely with the Technical Manager, the Deputy Technical Manager will help deliver a broad programme across our venues, studio, outdoor spaces and producing projects. No two weeks are the same: one day may involve preparing for a touring production, the next supporting an in-house show, community event, concert, rehearsal or creative development project.
We are looking for a practical, positive and collaborative theatre technician who enjoys solving problems, supporting artists and colleagues, and helping a busy venue operate safely and professionally. This is a hands-on role with room to contribute ideas, develop skills and play an important part in the future of Hawk’s Well Theatre.
Key Responsibilities
· Work with the Technical Manager to deliver the safe, professional and welcoming technical operation of events at Hawk’s Well Theatre, the Art Deco Theatre and Temple Street Studio.
· Support visiting companies, performers, producers and creative teams from advance planning through to get-in, rehearsal, performance and get-out.
· Contribute to Hawk’s Well’s own productions and co-productions, helping to realise the creative and technical ambitions of each project.
· Provide technical support for engagement, peacebuilding and community programmes, including work delivered in non-traditional and outdoor settings.
· Operate and maintain lighting, sound, stage and related technical systems, with particular responsibility in areas that match your experience and strengths.
· Assist with fit-ups, technical rehearsals, performances, turnarounds and venue changeovers to a consistently high standard.
· Advise incoming productions on venue specifications, technical possibilities, staffing requirements and practical solutions.
· Help schedule, brief, support and supervise casual and part-time technical staff and local crew.
· Contribute to a positive learning culture by sharing knowledge, mentoring less experienced staff and supporting good working practices.
· Carry out routine maintenance, checks and minor repairs, helping ensure that equipment and spaces remain safe, reliable and ready for use.
· Support compliance with health and safety procedures, risk assessments and relevant industry standards.
· Use initiative, sound judgement and calm communication to resolve technical issues and keep performances and events running smoothly.
· Work collaboratively across departments, recognising that a successful event depends on strong communication, mutual respect and shared purpose.
Who We Are Looking For
· At least a year’s professional experience in technical theatre, live performance, events or a comparable arts venue.
· A strong practical background in at least one technical discipline, such as lighting, sound, stagecraft or production technology, together with a willingness to work across other areas.
· A collaborative and approachable manner, with the confidence to communicate clearly with artists, touring personnel, colleagues and crew.
· The ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
· Good organisational skills, attention to detail and a solutions-focused approach.
· A genuine commitment to creating a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for artists, audiences, participants and colleagues.
· Flexibility to work evenings and weekends in line with the theatre programme.
· A full, clean driving licence.
· Familiarity with Microsoft Office and relevant industry-standard software is desirable.
· Training in areas such as manual handling, first aid and working at height is advantageous; additional training can be supported where appropriate.
What We Offer
· The opportunity to contribute directly to one of the busiest theatres in the country.
· A varied role across two theatres, a studio and a growing programme of outdoor and off-site work.
· Experience across touring work, in-house productions, artist development, community engagement and peacebuilding projects.
· A supportive, creative and ambitious working environment where technical expertise is valued.
· Opportunities to develop professionally and broaden your experience across different venues, disciplines and forms of live performance.
