General Manager – Specialist Lifting Solutions
About the Role
As General Manager, you will take ownership of Rockcastle's Lift & Shift division, leading the delivery of specialist lifting, transport and heavy movement packages across the UK and Europe. With live projects in Sweden, Germany and Ireland.
Working closely with the Directors, you will oversee the safe planning, commercial delivery and operational management of complex lifting projects, ensuring every package is delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest possible standard.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys solving complex lifting challenges, building lasting client relationships and leading teams to deliver exceptional results.
From initial enquiry and site survey through to project completion, you'll ensure every lift is professionally planned, commercially successful and executed safely.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead the day-to-day management of Rockcastle's Lift & Shift operations.
- Oversee the planning and execution of specialist lifting packages across multiple live projects.
- Ensure projects are delivered safely, on programme and within budget.
- Coordinate cranes, transport, specialist lifting equipment and personnel.
- Maximise utilisation of company assets and subcontract resources.
- Oversee mobilisation, logistics and project delivery from enquiry through to completion.
- Attend site meetings and maintain strong relationships with clients, principal contractors and project teams.
Technical & Project Management
- Review client requirements and develop practical lifting solutions.
- Coordinate site surveys, lift plans, route assessments and project logistics.
- Ensure RAMS, lift plans and supporting documentation are completed to the highest standard.
- Work closely with Appointed Persons, Lift Supervisors and operational teams.
- Manage complex and high-risk lifting operations.
- Ensure compliance with LOLER, PUWER, BS7121, CDM Regulations and company procedures.
Commercial Responsibilities
- Support tender submissions and prepare quotations for Lift & Shift packages.
- Monitor project profitability, budgets and forecasts.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and increase margins.
- Develop new business opportunities while strengthening existing customer relationships.
- Work with Directors to support the continued growth of Rockcastle's specialist lifting services.
Leadership
- Lead, motivate and develop operational teams.
- Foster a positive safety culture across the business.
- Ensure employees receive appropriate training and development.
- Monitor performance and drive continuous improvement.
- Promote collaboration between operations, transport and commercial teams.
Essential Requirements
- Significant management experience within the lifting, crane hire or heavy transport industry.
- Strong understanding of specialist Lift & Shift operations.
- Experience managing complex lifting projects.
- Excellent knowledge of BS7121 and lifting operations.
- Experience coordinating cranes, transport and specialist lifting equipment.
- Strong commercial and financial awareness.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- CPCS Appointed Person qualification.
- Lift planning experience.
- Project Management qualification.
- IOSH or NEBOSH.
- Experience delivering turnkey lifting packages.
- Knowledge of heavy machinery relocation, plant installation or industrial moves.
