Project title: Development of a novel continuous respiratory vital sign sensor
Failure to detect and treat respiratory compromise results in significant human and economic impact. Respiratory compromise is associated with increased hospital length-of-stay, costs and mortality risk. Today, there is no non-invasive continuous monitoring solution for both respiratory rate and volume, which are essential for accurate monitoring and early detection. The solution, the Ribbon device, aims to monitor both rate and volume continuously for the first time. It has the potential to eliminate delayed diagnosis of respiratory compromise, enabling earlier intervention for better patient outcomes at lower costs to hospital healthcare systems.
Please note that Garda vetting will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for a post.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
The successful candidate will be work with the a group in the School of Engineering, Trinity College Dublin who are developing a novel respiratory volume wearable device and conducting a research study in healthy volunteers and patient populations. In this study, the device will used alongside traditional respiratory volume data collection methods.
Data collection will involve healthy participants and patients from St. James Hospital, Dublin.
Responsibilities will include completing the data collection using the novel device and existing gold standards like spirometry. The successful applicant with complete the recruiting and consent process with participants to collect the necessary information. This data collection may take place in locations suitable to the participants (healthy volunteers) and the ICU/ general ward (St. James Hospital) under the guidance of the clinician involved with the project. This role will involve learning how to use technologies that measure respiratory function, then co-ordinating, teaching and monitoring their use by participants during the study. This role will require a high degree of cooperation with other clinical and research staff involved in generating relevant data for the study. S/he must be flexible to allow for the fluctuating time demands of the project, and be self-motivated, with excellent organisational, clinical, interpersonal and communication skills.
The successful applicant to be accepted onto the panel will be expected to perform a combination of the tasks below:
· Approach and consent participants for the healthy volunteer cohort.
· Approach patients/next of kin in St. James’s Hospital.
· Describe the nature of the study to the prospective patient and caregiver participants and talk them through the consent process.
· Learn and subsequently teach the technologies that will be employed during the study and support study participants in their use.
· Coordinate with the multidisciplinary research and clinical team as appropriate to deliver all elements of the research project.
· Take a lead role in co-ordinating data collection from multiple sources.
· Keep accurate, up-to-date, detailed records of research.
· Report regularly to the project supervisors.
· Appropriately manage the large datasets generated by the project.
· Carry out some data cleaning and statistical analysis
