Job Description Book and Paper Conservator
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Book and Paper Conservator to lead the operations of our bindery, overseeing the conservation of archival and damaged paper materials, conservation and repair of rare books, and the creation of bespoke hand-bound books.
This is a senior, hands-on role that includes line management, technical leadership and business development responsibilities. The successful candidate will ensure the highest standards in conservation and craftsmanship, while also managing the day-to-day operations and strategic growth of the bindery.
Key Responsibilities - Conservation & Restoration
· Assess and conserve damaged or fragile paper items including manuscripts, maps,
prints, and archival materials.
· Conserve and stabilize historic and archival books using minimally invasive and
reversible techniques.
· Develop and implement treatment plans in line with professional conservation ethics
and standards.
· Document all treatments in accordance with archival and museum best practices.
· Bookbinding
· Repair and replace book bindings, including sewing, re-backing, board reattachment,
and tooling.
· Design and handcraft bespoke books using traditional and modern binding
techniques (e.g., case binding, leather binding, fine bindings).
· Produce new, high-quality bindings for commissions, limited editions, and internal
projects.
· Line Management & Team Leadership
· Line Management responsibility: managing workload and performance.
· Provide training and mentoring in conservation and binding techniques.
· Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient workshop environment.
Operations & Business Development
· Manage the daily operations of the bindery, including scheduling, inventory,
procurement of materials, and equipment maintenance.
· Develop client relationships and oversee commissioned work from inquiry to delivery.
· Lead marketing efforts including outreach, exhibitions, and social media to promote the bindery's services.
· Prepare budgets, track financial performance, and identify new revenue streams.
· Collaborate with cultural institutions, private collectors, and publishers on bespoke projects.
Person Specification - Essential Skills and Experience
· Professional qualification in paper conservation or bookbinding
· Proven track record in conserving paper and books to museum or archival standards.
· Expertise in a wide range of traditional and modern bookbinding techniques.
· Experience in team leadership or workshop supervision.
· Strong communication skills with clients, colleagues, and external partners.
· Project management and budget handling experience.
· Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and a strong aesthetic sense.
Desirable.
· Accreditation/Membership with a relevant conservation or bookbinding body (e.g.,
ICON, AIC, Society of Bookbinders).
· Experience in public engagement, teaching, or workshops.
· Knowledge of digital tools for documentation and design.
Working Conditions
· Workshop-based with occasional off-site consultations or exhibitions.
· Some lifting and handling of heavy or fragile materials required.
· Fully equipped Bookbindery / conservation lab based at Muckross House, Killarney
