About the role
Mullan Lighting is seeking a creative and practical Production Designer to support the development and making of our fabric lampshade range. This role is focused on using a strong understanding of textiles, fabric behaviour, colour, texture, and construction to create custom lampshade designs from sourced materials, rather than designing and printing original textiles in-house.gradireland+2
This is a hands-on role that combines product development with practical making. The successful candidate will be involved in fabric selection, sourcing, sampling, sewing, and lampshade production, while working closely with internal teams to ensure designs are both visually strong and suitable for manufacture.careerexplorer+2
Key responsibilities
- Develop custom fabric lampshade designs in line with Mullan’s product style and customer requirements.
- Use knowledge of textiles, colour, texture, and material suitability to create commercially viable lampshade concepts.gradireland+1
- Source and evaluate fabrics, trims, and related materials from textile suppliers.humanb+1
- Work with existing and sourced fabrics rather than creating printed textile designs in-house.
- Prepare samples and prototypes for new lampshade styles and product development.
- Carry out some sewing and hands-on making as part of sample development and lampshade production.
- Collaborate with production teams to ensure designs are practical, consistent, and manufacturable.
- Review finished samples for quality, fit, finish, and overall aesthetic.
- Maintain design records, specifications, and sample information.

Requirements
- Experience in textiles, interiors, soft furnishings, product design, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of fabric types, textile behaviour, texture, colour, and material application.gradireland+2
- Ability to use textile knowledge to create bespoke lampshade designs from existing or sourced materials.
- Comfortable working in a practical, hands-on role with some sewing and product making required.
- Good attention to detail and a strong visual eye.
- Ability to work closely with design, production, and management teams.
- Organised, proactive, and capable of managing samples and multiple tasks.
- Previous experience in lampshades, homewares, interiors, or decorative products would be an advantage.ziprecruiter+1
